Hi all,

one of my friend is looking for a good stereo system..His budget is 75 to 80k including cdp, amp, speakers and cables etc...

He mostly listens to classical, jazz and some pop (very rare). He is residing at chennai and his listening room size is 15X10.

But the constraint is since nowadays most of the products are made in china, its better to get the products in chennai as if anything goes wrong can get serviced easily instead of sending the product to pune or hyderabad etc...

so on considering that the products which are available in chennai are marantz, mordaunt short, boston, def-tech, denon, kef, polk audio, wharfedale, klipsh, energy, jamo and finally the so called high-end audio products (nakamichi and bose).

Could anyone in this forum please give a good configuration?

Your pal could look at Lyrita audio's Integrated valve amp(30W RMS )& Harmony One speakers.Cost would be around 60k,well within the budget indicated.
You could visit Lyrita's website for more eqpt details, for a review of the setup plz see the thread "Budget HiFi from Lyrita"in this forum.
For the kind of music your pal likes,& his room size this could be a v.good fit.

Kamal

Very good recommendation.
Avoid the usual Chinese made budget branded floorstanding speakers at this price point. Look at Lyrita audio or Acoustic portrait for fantastic quality speakers especially for his music tastes. If he is scared of valves, you can look at the NAD C320bee / Rotel RA03/NAD C352 amp and a decent cd player from Nad or Marantz. Manek on this forum has been using the cadence Arita, nad 320bee and nad cd player for similar music with great success. I guess all three components with decent stands for arita or any other similarly priced bookshelf speakers can be had below 80k.

Squarewave, definitely he would like valves but the thing is the budget if its under 80k then he prefer valves..

btw even NAD products are nowadays made in china right? thats why i didn't recomend him eventhough i know that c320bee is THE BEST amp.

Further can anyone tell me where can I contact for Cadence audio?

NAD320BEE is not "THE BEST AMP"

hi vpriyan,

i really think you've caught hold of the wrong end of the stick on the 'made in china' issue. especially when you junk a NAD just cos you think it's made in china. most manufacturers get their manufacturing outsourced and do quality supervision.

for that matter very little of nike is made in the US it's still a huge brand.

do reconsider. you'll be depriving your pal of a lot of good options.

with regard to sending things back for repairs, it would depend more on how helpful the dealer is rather than the make of the product. a dealer 100 miles away from you might turn out to be more helpful than your corner dealer.

ok manek...agreed

I have a simple configuration..

Marantz CD5400 - 16500
Marantz PM7200 - 28000 (From Pro Acoustics Chennai - dealer of Sharda Motors)
Quad 12L - 39000 (From Musicals Chennai - dealer of Designer Audio)

Could you please tell me your comments on this...

yes stieve boy you are right but the fact is I searched for NAD dealers in India and I got few dealers like SoundNVision, music ranch and of course Lacozy but don't know who will help at last if any problem occurs...

I remember once Prithvi adviced me not to believe in brands which don't have proper after sales support..

In NAD website its indicated clearly that only if the product is bought from Lacozy i'm eligible for warranty...

So you tell me stevie boy what to do then....

Hi !

Marantz & Quad would be a nice combination. A few points:

-Marantz has newer models of both the amp (PM-7001) & CPD (CD-5001)
-New CDP 5001 is really good - I found it better than my earlier NAD 521BEE
-I have done a direct comparision between NAD & Marantz Amps. I found NAD better - Marantz excels in AVRs
-Amps don't really go wrong and don't usually need after sales support
-CDPs do have problems and need servicing (which is not of much help many a times)
-Speakers too don't go worng
-Try KEF & Boston speakers too

Hi vpriyan,
I was not bashing all equipment made in china. China makes some wonderful stuff too. I was trying to steer you away from budget “big mainstream brand” floor-standing speakers as an option at this price point for classical and Jazz. And most of them are made in china. It was not a blanket statement. They will just boom when the double bass comes on with Jazz and classical. Most do not sound coherent due to bad quality multiple drivers. The brand has to give you multiple drivers and a huge cabinet for so less money so it becomes an issue of ‘quantity over quality”.
Floor-standers are definitely an option if you consider the sequel reference from Lyrita audio which can be had for around 30k. The MS 301 from acoustic portrait may not be an option at this price point. If going for big brands, look for the best Bookshelf speaker you can find around 35k. You will need another 4-5k for decent stands.
BTW: I have checked out the AE EV01 at my home with the NAD c350. That speaker although rated at 91 db needs lots of juice. It could be the impedance curve. But they sounded quite nice.

Vpriyan, you've recd a no. of recommendatons by now.I strongly suggest that you & your pal grab hold of the fav Cds and start auditioning!
DO NOT get overawed by big names or the sales pitch of the dealers!
And, subject of course to the budgetry constraints, consider what sounds musical &does not tire your ears-you should be able to listen to the setup for long without ear fatigue setting in-this is impt since initially bright sounding setups may appear attractive but you wld tire of them soon once you get them home.
Your music should sound good to you!
Also ,consoder a good Universal player i/o only a cd Player-gives you more flexibility...
JUST LISTEN IMPARTIALLY AND TRUST YOUR EARS!
Good luck!

vpriyan,

Can you name a brand having full fledged service ? you will be surprised to note that most of the big brand dealers are nothing more than traders. So dont worry much about after sales service get a product that sounds good and looks well made and try to get general public openion on reliability.

Good luck and happy listening

Ani, having a service facility for your eqpt is definitely a help!
Viren is stuck with a NAD CDP for which there is no service centre in Delhi, and NAD BBY have not been any help.
So, he had to put the set to one side and bought a Marantz which has a service centre in delhi.
Things may go on fine ,but when they do go wrong ,you should'nt find yourself in a Viren like situation!

ask very clearly before buying just how much help you'll get. whether you have to courier the unit to the dealer. what costs you will have to bear to service the unit. whether he will repair it for you in the first place. will you get a written warranty? i guess its like any other industry. service sucks here in india.

try viren. his valves are pretty good and pretty good value for money too.

My Sonodyne Cinque 5.1 with AVR300 gave me some problems already. I purchased the package in Mar 06. First the left speaker had no sound, the AVR was repaired. Then the AVR suddenly was not producing any sound for variable durations from few seconds to few minutes. Again the AVR was repaired. The latest was a satellite from the 5.1 - the front right had its tweeter blown in Sep 06 just before the pujas. Again the tweeter was replaced.

Agreed that after sales support from Sonodyne was very good. To replace the tweeters I had to call them on phone only. But, it has shaken my belief in Sonodyne and that speakers and amp do go wrong. I may be one of the few unlucky ones.

For my choice,
NAD C320 BEE = 21000
NAD C521 BEE = 16000
Dali Concept 6 = 32000 (other choices are Paradigm Phantom, Monitor Audio BR5, Wharfedale Diamond 9.6)
Total = 69000

I would still strongly recommend Lyrita's setup-truly HiFi sound at a budget;do listen to it!
I've not heard any foreign brands in the price bracket that you've mentioned which are equal to Lyritas Tube Amp/Harmony speakers.Plz don't have any jitters bec its an Indian brand...

Hi !

Kamal is right. Lyrita Audio Harmony One Speakers and the tube amp are great value for money. I prefer the Tube preamp with Tube monoblocks.

You actually graduate to a higher level for the same amount of money spent.

I think that could be better answered by someone from Lyrita Audio. You could ask Viren (a forum member) who is the designer and owner of Lyrita Audio. He can tell you about all the logistics about Sales and service.

Anybody have views about Mordaunt Short Avante 906. The particular salesman insisting on that speaker with Marantz PM 7001 as he is the dealer for MS.

I had a chance to listen with MS 904 but not more than 10 min. So couldn't judge it.

Somehow I am not too impressed with Mordaut Short. I found them just average. In fact Boston from the same dealer sound better.
