Hello folks

I just wanted to report that my twin Sonodyne Sonus towers + Roarr Subwoofer have been rocking for the last few months and I am quite happy (specially after I learnt to change the speaker size in receiver settings to "small" and set the cross over to around 60 hz). The bass performance has improved dramatically specially for dolby digital recordings which I use in 2 channel stereo setting, so bass was very important.

Having invested a lot in onkyo tx-nr 900 receiver, I am now plannin to:

1. Add 2 surrounds and center speakers to enjoy dolby/dts fully in 5.1. I think given I already have sonodyne towers_ sub, I should go for their surrounds and center - atleat in theory same brand gives good match. What do you think?

2. My receiver has a zone 2 which can drive 110 watts 8 ohms dedicated for those 2 channels. I am planning to utlize this for a second room and looking for good quality (base is very very important) bookshelve recommendations around 25,000 range. Any suggestions?

3. As an aside, internet radio and mp3 streaming are working fine on my receiver, I have put all my music on my PC (encoded at 192 kbps) and run an ethernet cable to my receiver and play all music there using the receivers OSD interface.

Thanks
Manish

Congrats Manish, Good to see our very own Sonodyne is doing a great job. BTW just curious to know whether there is any boom and resonance problem when you play your system with the sub on ?
How do you keep the bass from booming, any specific room treatment ?
How big is your room ?
What are the other recievers did you audition before finalizing on Onkyo TX-SR900 ?

As far as center and surrounds are concerned, its advisable to go for the same family center. For surrounds also Sonodyne has options like Dipoles or else their Genie sats.
Genie2 especially is fantastic.

Hello Abhi

Firstly, I am not an audio equipment expert, am merely a music lover - so my perspectives should be seen in that context.

I don't have a major boom and resonance problem (remember I listen mainly rock/metal so more bass is sometimes richer to my ears so sometimes I may be ignoring extra resonance which may be disliked by purists), I had some boom initally that I tweaked through settings after trial and error. Here is what I do:

On my receiver settings:

- Front left/right speakers set to "Small"
- Crossover set to "60 Hz"

On the subwoofer:

- Level (volume) set to medium
- Upper range of frequency set to around 80-90 Hz

Most of the boom I experience comes from base heavy recordings - I just tuen the sub volume down and that does.

No the room has no treatment done, it is just my normal living room.

The room size is 17 feet by 17 feet .

To be honest, I did not audition anything else simply because NR900 model came out as the only receiver (after the reseach) to have an ethernet port for mp3 streaming. Since I have wired my house for ethernet, I did not want to let go for not having the capability in the receiver. Then I realized that NR900 is a high-end model anyway and had rest of the bells and whistles, I just went to modern world, auditioned it and bought it. On my request, modern sent Jamo 570/590 pair to my house for auditioning, I was not too impressed for the price quoted. I then took receiver to sonodyne lal bagh office and connected to towers and was resonably happy with the price and bought it.

I have recently tried some 128 kbps encoded music also (that sounds shitty on computer) and they seem ok to me , I think (I hope atleast !) that its the receiver that is doing magic to them !

Lets meet up some time

Thx
Manish

Abhi Boss

Please check my other query regarding bookshelves for second zone. I would appreciate if you could recommend some models with good bass.

Also, if it is not asking for too much, can I invite you for a drink at my place and you can perhaps give me some suggestions.

Thanks
Manish

Hey Manish,
Great Man let me know when we can meet. BTW I havent auditioned many bookshelves primarily because I was looking for towers. But I have heard a few bookshelves with good bass like Acoustics Energy Evo1/2 (I dont remember the number), Even the Acoustics Portrait has a good bookshelf speaker (Monitor series). Others would be Monitor Audio, Boston Acoustics, Wharfdale. Just go around on a weekend you will definitely find some good stuffs. The above brands are well rated btw.
