Hi all,

I recently moved to Mumbai (from Denmark). I'm looking for a pair of small studio monitors (room is 15x20ft or so) for working on music projects. A lot of my work is modern electronica, very percussive and bass-heavy.

Back home I'd be looking at brands like Mackie or Genelec. But I figure I'd try to find an Indian manufacturer now that I'm here.

What brands can be recommended, and where in Mumbai can I go to test and eventually buy these? Price preferably not above 40-50K IRS. I know there are a couple of manufacturers on this site, and would not mind their chiming in however unbiased they may be.

Hope you can help - input will be much appreciated. Best regards.

hi morten,

There is a shop in one of the lanes of Lamington Road in Mumbai that stocks many brands of studio monitors, including imported and Indian ones. I can't remember the name of the shop but I remember seeing studio Mackie, Gemini, Behringer, Samson stuff in his shop... Maybe you should check Lamington Road out...

Morten,

Please tell me how your search goes and what sounds good to you. I am interested in knowing whether a pair of active studio monitors would make a better buy than regular bookshelves.

If you just need passive speakers, Norge and Pulz make bookshelves which they claim can be used in studios.

Dear Neutral
These passive speakers you mention are no more capable of being used as studio monitors.Modern monitoring systems are a completely different breed of tranducers which are very purpose specific,e.g broadcast monitoring, recording, mastering etc etc.
A general purpose revealing speaker is no more the norm,as other aspects such as size, listening distance,LF contouring(the mixing and broadcasting board can affect bass)required SPL levels and many such consideration decide a monitor design.
Secondly monitors are meant to have high level of transparency along with low levels of distortion, though this is tehnically what we want in a home speaker too,the subjective balance between these two breed of loudspeakers is quite different.
Lots of cheap monitoring solutions are now available on the market, please understand that these solutions are there for a lower end use, such as TV station and FM station and OB van use,and not high end use such as recording and mastering.
I hope this insight helps you in whatever small way,but I think you will be better off owning a domestic speaker for home use.
Regards Deaf.

Thanks for the replies everyone.

Deaf: Yes, I was looking at Sonodyne as well - but acording to their homepage, they have only one model under the heading 'studio monitor', the SM series which is an active monitor coming in two sizes, the SM50 and SM100.

An active speaker would be perfect, as I haven't brought my amplifier.

Another model, the SLF series, is labeled a 'powered speaker'. So this is a another kind of acitve speaker. I can't figure out if it would suit my needs.

Anyone with experince with these Sonodyne products?

I'm also considering buying from a smaller custom shop. I've seen Lithos and Absolute Reality mentioned here, others?

Dear Morten
To the best of my knowledge they now have 3-4 models in their lineup.Best to give them a call I guess. They have brought in lots of young engineers and marketing staff ,so the response could be quite good.Best of luck, cheers.
Regards Deaf.
P.S speak to Rajiv of Lithos,he is really sharp with regards to design,he could actually do a custom job.
Another really insightful designer is a guy not very out in the open.He is a sort of consultant to designers. His name is Milind Rao Rane.I will PM you his contact.

Thanks a lot! I will call Sonodyne. I cannot access Lithos' webpage, it has been 'under construction' for the last week or so. Anyone know if he is still in business?

Thanks Deaf for your intelligent and knowledgeable reply. I must be out of date in regard to the different types of monitors used for different studio uses.

But the marketing of these companies is certainly deceptive - they clearly mention their products as being suitable for studio use.

Deaf, can you give me a link to a site that tells of the linkage between different studio uses and the types of monitors to be selected. The only reason I would consider an active monitor for home use is the tight integration between the amp and the drivers. This completely eliminates the risk of a mismatch which is quite possible when combining two good products from different companies but which might not gel together.

Deaf, Is Milind the ex-Pulz guy?

Morten, Lithos is very much in business. I guess Rajiv is revising his product line.

Dear Nuetral,
All mordern specs or description on monitors with detailed intended application of the product are on the site,so I guess that solves the issue.
Yes Milind is the ex-Pulz guy.I know him since the last 7-8years.He has evolved hugely with regards to loudspeaker design, and has worked with the whos who in the field e.g Laurence Dickie,Larry McCabe,Peter Larsen,Mike Jewitt
etc etc in his Peerless audio days.I am the only guy who is allowed to give him 'gallis',which he laughs off everytime.
We sometimes get together for some crazy off tangent Diy stuff.

Give me Milind's contact no and yours, Deaf. I may speak to him if he has the time (and is based in Mumbai). He may be able to give me some advice on my Pulz equipment.

Milind no more works in Pulz and has decided to go independant, so as to explore his ideas on loudspeakers to the fullest, which he feels can only take place if he is his own boss.

deaf...

that should not stop him from coming over and telling us his bit about pulz

Actually there is so little info about the pulz amps out there.....this could be an eye opener for all....on the pulz website they have all their products except info on their home audio amps....no spec sheet....no nothing. Would love to know how one could tweak the pulz amps to make em better, especially the RS250....so deaf if you could shed some light on it...?

Just thought of something: Is Cadence still a good buy as after the recent jump in price?

I was considering their Arita model. Would they be suitable for monitoring?

Of course I would need to check them out IRL, would just like to know if it's worth the time finding a showroom for them.
