Hi, Would any of you know which is the most suitable high quality but still moderately priced component based stereo system available in India. If I compare betweeen Indian manufactured brands like Sonodyne, Lithos, Pulz, and Norge available in Mumbai, which would be the best buy.

The system should serve a room of around 200 square feet. Its accuracy and not its loudness is important. It should be sweet sounding for classical, jazz, vocals, and instrumentals. No heavy metal or other heavy stuff required.

If anyone has compared the Indian brands side-by-side, I will value your opinions. How big an advantage would I get over a Rs 20,000 Sony set?

hey there!
Well, am rather a novice in this field. Perhaps thats the reason i could share some of my own, un assuming experiences with u on this. Sony is usually battered in these fora, but i feel that their new AVRs + floorstanders have done a decent job of stereo separation. Actually their idea was to give Yamaha, etc some run for the money in HT, but doubt that since yamaha has all the certificatins.
Sony AVR + floorstanders ~23 k @ sony world. Havent tried any of these brands. Did try Torvin - a chennai brand. Was strictly ok, and not too much of a save either. (floorstanders and bookshelves both start around 10k range)
thanks for reading

Hello, the Pulz combination should serve your purpose to the fullest, for the budget of 20,000, you'll get an integrated pulz amp-preamp which would come for 7500/- and pulz speaker matching these for 12000. maybe you could splurge the 500 on some cables! you should definetly check these out. these are realyl good for movies as well. as for other choices. you also get JBL 5.1 setup for 20000. it has a sub-woofer, 5 satellites and an amflifier integrated in the bass module to drive all the speakers..just needsa source and you are all set.

Wow! Thanks guys. Didn't expect so many responses just from yesterday afternoon. My total budget's around Rs 30,000 to Rs 35,000 of which I need to set aside 6,000 for the DVD player. So I have max Rs 30,000 for the amplifier, speakers, and cables.

I didn't know Sony made any floorstanders - only heard of the usual mini-compos. But I guess the pro brands will sound better. Any suggestions on what will make the best use of this budget. As my name 'Neutral' says, I want balanced neutral sound - not anything bombastic or boomy. More interested in quiet listening sessions whilst reading a book. I don't have many DVD movies - so surround sound may not be worth my money.

for ur price range and music choices i can only think of Wharfedale(maybe a Tannoy mercury seiers)standmounts.the diamond8.1 is superb for its price. however, if u can spend that little extra go for the diamond9.1. u can also try out acoustic energy evo series standmounts.
regarding the amp, check out Nad 320BEE. it is excellent for its price point and u certainly will not be disapointed. u may have to set aside an additional 3-4k for cables.
cheers,
Ben

Viren,

Could you tell me something more about Lyrita? What is its power output and what sensitivity speakers can be used with it?

Would solid state be a better choice than tubes? I've heard that tubes do not produce tight bass. And how durable are they? The humidity is very high in Bombay.
