any particular models that i should be looking at at the price range that i have mentioned and reasons please for your preference towards LCD or DLP.
Also, what are the featurers you would like to see in a home theater projector? Specs for DLp and LCD understandably vary , but in this price range what would they be for the respective technologies?
Rajesh, hope u are not vouching for DLP cause u work for the company that invented it.
Cheers,

What brand?... what model?...why 'this' brand?... why not 'that' brand?
Get it?! I want the whole deal on projectors in the 1000-1500$(street prices in US).

I can give you my thoughts on projection TVs not projectors. However, the ones I auditioned are upwords of $3000.

In the projection TV range, the DLP TV are certainly the sharpest (no personal interests). Overall between PDP, LCD and DLP TVs, I liked the PDP ones the most.

I have'nt seen the newest of LCD projectors, but the old ones had visible horizontal lines. And a DLP projector which is saw recently, produced brilliant images.I had to look hard to find the lines.
The one i saw ,is a sony.

Benks, I have seen DLP projectors consistently brighter than LCD projectors. Did not compare image quality closely though. The fundamental issue with LCD is that the high temperature from the lamp radiations heats up the LCD, reducing its dynamic range - a DLP dynamic range is not affected by tmeperature as much.
A popular DLP brand is InFocus, however very expensive ($3k upwards). Sanyo has good low cost projectors starting from slightly above $1K - basically lower contrast ratio and brightness compared to high end ones.
If you are going in for projectors, beware of the recurring lamp replacement cost - use it only for occassional movies and not try to replace regular TV viewing!

Hey guys,
thanks for your inputs..
Basically my parents want to use it for movies and i need to know if they are susceptible to rainbow effect or not...
if not then then DLP is definitely a possibility..
some of the projectors that i am looking at are.
Sanyo-PLV-Z2(LCD)XGA(1280x720) native
Panasonic PT-AE300U(LCD) XGA(1024x576) native
Optoma H31(DLP) SVGA native
Infocus Screenplay 4805 SVGA native
Benq 6110,6210,
Benq Pe-5210
Anyone who can help me narrow down the list are more than welcome..
Thanks for your comments Ravi..

comeon guys help me narrow down the choices..

The thing is the Benq 6110 is being offered for 32800 along with free shipping and a free lamp too on rebate..
the lamp alone is worth 400$...
but the downside is that the projector has a 4 segment color wheel and its speed is only 2x..
so rainbow effect s very much a possibility..
Have ruled out the Benq 6210 casue it is priced a bit higher than what am willing to shell out...
The others are, Optoma H31, Infocus 4805 and the Sanyo PLV-Z2..
these are all pretty much in the same price range..
have decided to drop the panasonic as it is way above my budget..
those of you who have auditioned the Pro Fx int he home theater room should know taht the projector they are using is the Sanyo-PLV Z1..the Z2 is an upgraded version with better contrast..
Your views on this would be greatly appreciated.

Dear Sachi,

There isn’t a defined parameter that says a Dlp is better than Lcd. Yes truly the high end models of companies such as SIM2’s ht 300e, MARANTZ’s vp12 s3, YAMAHA’s dpx 1200, PROJECTION DESIGN's action one, etc are simply the finest dlp projectors in the world.
To a lot of people the dlp is better only because they see a pixel free smooth image, when compared to an lcd.
Dlp projectors have a dmd chip based on micro mirrors.
Infact to be very honest with you, I somehow don’t like the colour rendition on the entry level Dlp projectors.
But over the years there have been a lot of technological advancements. Manufacturers are using technologies from their flagship models to their mid and entry level projectors to improve the image quality.
To some people DLP is the future, but I think 3 LCD is here to stay as well to compete with dlp. Im not denying that dlp aint good. Most of them now are pretty good.
It all differs from model to model, company to company. Infact there are a few entry level lcd projectors that deliver a better image than similarly priced dlp rivals.

If you can extend your budget a little then I would recommend the following projectors :

1.INFOCUS SCREENPLAY 5700 (native pal 16:9, 1024 * 576) (1000 ansi, 1400:1 contrast ratio)
2.OPTOMA H 57 (uses the darkchip2 , native pal 16:9) (1100 ansi, 3000:1 contrast ratio)
3.HITACHI PJ TX 100 (LCD) (1200 ANSI, 1200 CONTRAST RATIO)
(NATIVE NTSC 16:9 – 1280 * 720)

Nec is also a good brand to consider.

Also for your information Optoma is an OEM to a lot of world renowned brands.

So that you make the most of your projector, opt for a good quality dvd player.
I would recommend the Denon dvd 1910. It’s the cheapest with DVI out.
Basically interconnect the projector and the dvd player with a dvi cord.
This way you will get to see a beautiful image. Either 720p or 1080i lines of resolution.

There are a lot of companies manufacturing projectors. Opt for a projector specialist company.
Don’t always rely on the specs provided by the manufacturer. See the image quality for yourself.

If the application is movies only, then I would recommend you opt for 16:9 screen.

Also visit the site www.projectorcentral.com

Let me know what it is you finally opt for.

Jay

Jay,
thank you for your views and suggestiond..
i would love to get my hands on the optoma H57..Unfortunately.. ..my finaces a a bit streched..
i would really appreciate if you could help me narrow down the choices from the ones that i have poitned out..

The funny thing is Antrax(a company on coles Road) too suggests LCD projectors..saying that theya re time tested and the contrast ratio is not everything...
what i am worried abt DLPs are rainbow effects and possible SDE(screen door effects)..while with LCD SDE is a major factoralong with pixelization and maintainence..
Jay, what do u think of Sanyo projectors..?
the Sanyo PLV-Z2 is being offered for 999$ with free shipping(in the US of course) while the Sanyo PLV-Z1 that i saw here in Pro-Fx was around 1.2 lacs...
That's a saving of more than 100% for an advanced model..
the thing i am worrried abt is the reliability of projectors and projector lamps..
also i hear that Sanyo lamps conk out very early..i wish someone would give me some assurances..

Teh thing with infocus is taht they have an international warranty ..so that is definitelty a plus..
Your views are very much appreciated..

Dear Sachi,

First and foremost see if you can get some sort of local support in terms of spares.
Anyways, the specs of the Sanyo PLV Z2 on paper seem impressive and obviously at the price you mentioned its a steal.
It’s a little low on brightness, but that’s ok.
You just need to darken the room completely.
The lens shift has proven to be a delight. When practically installing, it’s a breeze.
No more headache of centering the projector exactly, hence no keystone correction required.

Well, yes I would tend to agree with what the company in US has to say.
For a fact LCD is time tested. And most definitely contrast ratio is not everything.
As I said, don’t always rely on the specs provided by the manufacturers.
There are quite a few lcd projectors with lower contrast levels than the dlp ones, but still the colour reproduction and the black levels are simply better.
The rainbow effect is a limitation everyone has to live with incase of dlp projectors.
There is nothing one can do about it, unless you opt for the very best in dlp.

The Sanyo is a fine choice. If possible see if you can hunt for the Hitachi pjtx100 for the same price.
I have seen the projector work, it’s a beautiful projector. Same specs as the Sanyo but more brighter.
Cheers, let me know....

Jay

I have had my eye on the Hitachi for quite some time now..
Jay what is its price here in Indid..?
This particular model is being sold for around 1270$(around 56000)..but i think there will be a drop in projector prices cause of CEDIA...
CEDIA starts from 7th and Hitachi is releasing its next version the PJ-TX200.
but the price though puts it well out of my budget. will wait and see till the end of this month as to what the prices are going to be and then make my decision..

Jay, one last thing. what is your opinion about the BENQ 6110 projector.also, can it be ceiling mounted.?
Thanks for all the inputs guys..

Decision time!

Okay guys,
the projector that i have decided(almost) to go for is the Benq-PB6110
It seems like it has very favourable reviews and my intention is to test the widescreen performance levels and maybe updrade it after a couple of years since projector tehnology is still very unpredictable and unreliable.

Here is the deal that i am looking at..
http://www.visualape...BenQ&Accessories=All
the native resolution is 800x600(SVGA).

The reason for me opting for this is that it comes with an extra lamp for free which itself costs around 400$.
so for 750$ i will be getting free shipping(in US) and two lamps with all standard accesories and 3 year warranty(of course, in US)..that comes upto around 32.7k which frankly i think is an unbelievable deal.
If any of you have auditioned a DLP with a 2x wheel do let me know your views on it.
Let me know what you guys think of the deal..do i go for it or not?
Cheers,

The deal is through!

The order has been placed, placed for the Benq-PB6110.
That's right...the same projector that kewl was looking to buy...
It is being rated higher than Infocus X2 and i got such an amazing deal to boot, it was just too good to ignore.
The projector costs me(my dad actually,am sheepish now)747$(including shipping) and along with this a free lamp which itself is worth 400$...!!
so effectively, i get an extra free lamp that is worth 400$ while i end up paying only 747$ for the new projector..
That's 32.7k in our currency.
Can you imagine it..a 102 inch screen(7 feet X 4 feet) for just 33k!
the extra lamp costs almost 25k rupees here..
awesome isn't it?!!
however, i will have to wait 3 months before i can lay my hands on it..
The wait is going to be more than worth it.
My thanks to everyone who helped me in making my decision.
here is the link for the projector on projectorcentral.com
http://www.projectorcentral.com/BenQ-PB6110.htm
and here is the site where the order has been placed.

What screen will you be using with this?

I too am thinking of going for a projector, as widscreen rptvs are just too expensive. But I'd like to know more about screens available in india.

once everything is set i will go in for a screen..
a typical Galite wall mounted manual screen costs around 6-7k
