Hi Guys,

Right now I am not in a position to plunge into a high end HT.(AVR & speakers etal).

So I have decided to treat myself to the lowest end?? of home theatre experience, if u can call it that.

So i have gone and bought the Philips DVP 5106K.
This player has a 5.1 output, dolby digital,& DTS.It also plays divx movies. For now I have connected it to my Aiwa vcd system.Even on those two channel the sound seems impressive to my newbie ears. The picture quality also is very good.
Since i wont be going in for a AVR for now, i want to buy a 5.1 setup with built in amplifier.Torvin has a humble
gear called Minimax 5.1. I have given the link to see the specs.
Since i am in Chennai i am having a digital set top box for cable and i can connect the Torvins to it and enjoy the movies in 5.1, since they claim, stereo sound can be converted to 5.1 with these speakers.

http://www.torvin.com/files/products/theatre/002.htm

It dosent have a remote ofcourse. I have heard these speakers at the Torvin outlet. They demoed the Matrix movie.I could hear the sound clearly from all the speakers.
The bass seemed a little overwhelming. But at this price range (Rs 7500) i can't complain about anything.
If i connect this to my DVP will i get any dolby digital &
DTS effects? (Ofcourse with DTS dvds)
Guys can any one of u suggest any 5.1 setup with amp to beat Torvin at this price range?
Sorry for the lengthy post folks & thanks in advance.
Cheers
Shri

Great news Shri..

I have the Philips 5106 and thats pretty good..

I dunno abt the Torvin Minimax..

Dont worry abt the remote.. u'll need to control the volume mainly thru the remote which u can control on the DVD using its remote.

Just press mode once and use the arrow keys to adjust the volume..

Keep rocking and have fun

Hi Sri,

Few months back I was in your shoes and looking for budget 5.1 sound. I did a lot of research then and therefore I am in position to advice you.

You are planning on relying on your DVD player's inbuilt decoder to create DTS or Dolby sound for your speakers. This is generally not advisable. DVD player's inbuilt decoders are infamous for being bad. If its possible to expand your budget, pls check out for Philips HTR-5000 package. It costs around 13K and includes AV receiver and 5.1 speakers.

The stereo sound can be heard on 5.1 setup only if its converted to Dolby ProLogic sound. An AV receiver like that of HTR-5000 does that.

Sadly, HTR-5000 is not available everywhere. I could not find it anywhere in Delhi. I then expanded my budget further and bought Onkyo HTS-580. I have heard that HTR-5000 is available in south so you may be in luck.

For those tight on budget, there is Philips HTR-2000 also available for around 6K. Its almost same as HTR-5000 but its AV reveiver (also referred as 'amplifier' by dealers) is of low quality. However, that also does the Dolby ProLogic thing for you.

I own Philips DVP5106 as well as Phlips DVP642. My frank opinion is that picture quality of DVP642 is sharper and brighter. Sadly its not available anymore. If someone is not into DivX playback; I would suggest him DVP642 over DVP5106.
For DivX/Xvid playback DVP5106 is better.

Best of luck!

HI,
Thanks Nimz for ur wishes.
Thank u also rshri for ur advice. torvin guys also cliam that minimax can convert 2 channel sound to 5.1.I have to ask them if the speakers have prologic 2. I think htr 5000 is available in chennai. But most people sneer at philips HTIBs.So i am reluctant to go for philips. anyway let me get a demo at the philips outlet.
As expected only two budding audio enthusiasts have answered me The mature audiophiles here may think it is beneath thier diginity to answer a question like this and i dont blame them.
Anyway i think i have to find an answer myself .
cheers

hey sri,

Go to the Philips Arena on mount road for the demo and get the product at a dealer for the discounts..

BTW, does ur 5106K play other region DVDs. Mine doesnt.. I recommended the same one for a frnd of mine and in his player it plays.. he said the dealer did some thing with the setup and the codes changed!!!

Coming to ur query.. the dealers dont recommend the HTR 2000 or the 5000 on account of the build quality... i had this from 2 different dealers.. but again I didnt look at these too critically so cant pass any judgements!!

say dude.. y not go for a Pulz stereo amp and stereo spkrs and slowly build a hi fi system...shud take u to 15K at the max!!

Hi Nimz,

thanks again buddy. As i have said before i am proposing to go for a full pledged system only after building a dedicated room.So this is only a stop gap arrangement. So i dont want to spend too much now.I am looking at Pioneer HTiB HTP 2600. It has got a AV Receiver and 5.1 speakers.
A friend has assured me he can get it from Dubai. It retails at usd 199, so it may cost me Rs 10k max.
Here is the link for the specs,

http://www.pioneerel...33_209695987,00.html

Coming to ur query abt the region code hack its a cake walk man. simply try this

1 - Make sure there is no disk in the player
2 - Press EJECT on the remote or on the player. The eject icon has to
be visible on screen for the hack to work!!!
3 - Press MENU (System) on the remote
4 - Press the RIGHT button on the remote until you get to the
PREFERENCES screen
5 - Now enter the sequence 135566 with the remote control
6 - Now "Region Code" should appear
7 - Select the 0 (multiregion)
8 - Press MENU (System) on the remote to exit the setup screen
9 - Press the power button on the remote to set the player on standby,
this saves the new setting
Bingo! Now ur DVP can play anything u throw at it.
Cheers
Shri

heres what i did for my philips dvdp642k-
you guys can try it-

regs
anirvan

ok, i got the steps u have to do to make it region free from two sites and there seems to be people who have tried this out successfuly.
here goes

1. Turn on the player.
2. Open the tray.
3. Press the following sequence on the remote:
7 8 9 OK 0
4. The number 0 will appear on the lower left side of your screen.
5. Your player is now region free! Put in a DVD and enjoy!

NOTE: The 0 in the sequence above represents the region code. 0 = region free. If you want to change your player to just a specific region code, replace the 0 with the region number you want.

The hack should be perfectly safe, but USE IT ON YOUR OWN RISK!

Def Tech + Marantz??

Hi Friends,

I am planning to mix Def Tech ProCinema 600 with Marantz SR4500 AVR. I am new to the HT domain. So, could you advise me if it makes sense?

My room size is 16x14. And it would be mostly used for watching movies. Getting the pkg for abt 50k from Dubai (including all expenses).

Thanks.

Ayush,

I think the combination should do well and it's a great deal you are getting. But do audition the setup & then go for it.
