One of my friend who’s from Bangalore wants to go for LCD (not plasma) TV of 40” or 42” & prepared to invest 1.00L. He's prepared to stretch little if he gets any good deals.

Short listed tentatively the brand Philips(not sure whether it's worth)
·model 9532, 42” Full HD – priced apprx 1.15L &
·model 9541, 42” HD Ready – priced apprx 0.95L.

There are other brands like Samsung 40” Full HD apprx 1.00L & Sony 40” Full HD apprx 1.25-1.30L & Sharp, JVC all around 1.10-1.20L.

As usual, each dealer tried to recommend the brands which they deals + brand where they get more margins. This lead to lot of confusions & he couldn’t decide on any thing properly.

I understand many were recommending SONY saying it has the best picture quality (compared to any brand) though they are slightly expensive than other brands.

My knowledge on video is zero. To help him, I rqst for your valuable suggestions on brand/model based on your firsthand experience.

Thanks

This is a helpful web site to get a quick idea of what is on the market, where to get it, etc.:

http://www.compareindia.com/products/televisions/

This one in particular seems to suit your criteria:
Samsung Mosel Blaque LA46M81B
as it has: a) great contrast ratio (15,000:1), b) Full HD (1920x1080), c) HDMI 1.3 connectivity

Sorry I did not make a personal recommendation as I foresee staying content with my CRT until OLED displays become affordable (many, many years from now)

If Hitachi has LCD....do look at them...they make amazing Plasma TVs.

I have seen most of these in action, and I find the Hitachi to be superior to all of these.

Consider the Hitachi L42X01A. Its a Full Hd 1080p 1920 x 1080 lcd tv.

Although I would recommend you buy the Hitachi 42" plasma.

And if you want the best, then blindly opt for the Pionner PDP-428XG.
I have not seen anything as good as this.

What about Pioneer? Aren't their plasma displays also well regarded? I am just going by reviews/word-of-mouth here, sorry.

Hitachis are excellent. Their TVs use S-IPS panels which have much better viewing angles and colors as compared to the Sonys and the Samsungs which are S-PVA.

However when looking at that kinda size, plasmas are unmatched in picture quality. Especially the Pioneer Elite Kuro plasmas.

I'll 've him to look at plasmas also. I think, he is much inspired by HD resolution/details of LCD. He has CRT also. I suggested to look for good projectors also. They are affordable now.

Is there a dealer for Hitachi in B'lore?

I am not really a TVPhile but i found the Samsung better than the entry level Sony LCDs and being the only 2 i compared went for a Samsung 32" (unless you have Tata Sky anything over 32" is actually a strain to watch)

I know that this thread is for a 40 inch TV.

However, any of you guys who are planning to buy a small size LCD, be aware ....

Industry buzz is that Reliance DTH which will launch in Feb-March ( their test signals have already commenced ) will be offering an introductory package to their first 1 million subs :

Their DTH receiver + Dish + LNB ( electronics fitted on the Dish) + 6 months BIG DTH free subscription + a 26 inch TOSHIBA LCD TV for Rs 10,000 ( Ten Thousand Only).

Seems they have got a price of Rs 9,000 from Toshiba of the entry level 26 inch LCD TV. This is Toshiba's biggest order worldwide for a single model, 26 inch TV.

If true, the small LCD TV market is likely to collapse since therafter, consumers will not want to pay more than Rs 10 K for this TV size...

I must state all the yada-yada ... " All above are rumours, I am not resposnsible, I dont work for Reliance or Toshiba... blah blah blah. "

Since, pic quality is imp, I think looking at plasmas would be better. I hope plasma come with HD-1080P.

Dear Amp Nut> very very valuable info from you sir. For that matter, even now these LCDs/Plasmas are becoming obsolete or discontinued so soon. Within few months they come out with newer model with some unwanted added feature. Howmuch ever the good the prev models are, they loose its commercial value when the new models are introduced.

Guys thanks to all.

Dear powersupply,

Plasmas are available in full hd 1080p resolution, but only in bigger sizes - 50", 60", 65" and bigger.

Full hd is not available in the 42" yet.

Given a choice i would opt for a hd ready plasma compared to a full hd lcd.
If you get the chance, try to compare the Pioneer hd ready plasma with any full hd lcd.

Most 42 inch plasmas are 1024x768. However the rescaling engines are so good, the final output looks better than any full HD LCD that I've seen. I'd recommend this panel.

Dear Powersupply,

The Pioneer 42" 1024 x 768 was about 145k a month ago (they might have dropped the prices now) & the hitachi 42" 1024 x 1080 is about rs 85k.
