Hi friends , im planning on a basic music setup in my santro.
What i had in mind is a new JBL usb only head unit, which could output 25watt to a 4 ohm load according to the manual..My doubt is this- Could i connect my old sony mini-hifi bookshelf, probably rated at 8ohm to this head unit.Im not looking for window shattering loudness etc...

Hi Neono,

Using a Car Unit as a basic Home Stereo is not an unusual solution, and these can sound quite respectable if used with good speakers in the home.

To answer your question, YES, you can connect a 4 Ohm output Car unit to 8 ohm speakers. The only penalty will be lower output volume from the speakers.

If yr speakers are small and the shop keeeper obliging, you could even take yr speakers for a actual listen before buying ...

A couple of suggestions, if I may :

1. Use a HEFTY 12 VDC PSU to feed the unit. Atleast 3 Amperes DC output @ 12 Volts. A 5 Ampere or more output would be even better.

2. A couple of years ago when i was in the market for a unit for my car, I found the Alpine Units FAR superior to the Pioneer ones, and all other available at that ytime. Alpine is more expensive, and scan of features, but the sound quality, particularly clean treble, which had a delicacy to the sound. Do give it a listen.

All the best, and do post yr final purchase and your thoughts ...

Oops ! Sorry about my wrong assumption.

A word of caution... the car has very high levels of ambient noise and car speakers are called on to play much louder than in a home environment.

Also, the car is very different acoustically from the home. Dont be surprised if you dont recognise the sound of your home speakers when they are doing duty in yr car ...

Adding to AN, home speakers are not designed to take vibrations..you will have problems not just placing it but also about keeping it safe from mechanical dmamage (Crossovers/drivers/cabinet could all come loose)
