Free Jazz Concert at Shanmukhananda Hall

Jazz at the Shanmukhananda.Now that sound surreal.

The concert was outstanding !!

O.K here goes.The group was called the Jazz All Stars and are affiliated to the Jazz at Lincoln Center - www.jalc.org

The JALC is a foundation based in NY, dedicated to the propagation of Jazz.The great Wynton Marsalis is it's Musical Director.

The Jazz All Stars are a quartet comprising of the following musicians - Alvin Atkinson Jr. on drums,Charlie Porter on Trumpet, Ari Roland on Bass and Eli Yamin on the keyboards.

All of these gents are seasoned musicians who have 'sat in ' with a variety of artists raging from Steve Turre to Lou Donaldson.

The music on offer was a eclectic mix of standards - Take the 'A' train,Caravan,Evidence and original compositions by the various band members.One of the highlights of the evening (for me at least ) was an impromptu number latterly titled The Bombay Sway.

The band played for around two hours without a break and 'ah loved every minute of it.

My only crib if any is with people a)who insist on not switching off their F*&^%$g cell phones during the concert and b)insist on having a inconseqential conversation, in the middle of an intense bass solo.

The sound though patchy in the beginning ( perhaps understandably so, Shanmukhananda is geared more for a Himesh Reshmiya whine fest than a Jazz performance ) did improve considerably as the evening wore on.

...but having said that I can't really complain can I ? The hall is a 5 minutes walk from my place and to be privilaged to hear such awsome music, that too for Free.Now what better ways can one think of, to beat a [i]Stormy Monday[/i]
