Hi All,
There is a classical concert happening at Bangalore on 7th April. The event is at Koramangala Indoor stadium. I dont have much idea in the classical music space but would like to jot down the names of the performers of the event:

Hindustani Vocals: Pandit Rajan & Sajan Mishra

Saxophone & Flute: Padmashri Kadri Gopalnath & Pandit Ronu Majumdar (Jugalbandi)

Tabla: Rimpa Siva (Solo performance)

Dont know any of these artists, but still have bought the tickets (tickets available at Super Market, 5th avenue complex Brigade road). This would be my first ever experience with live classical performance...have my fingers crossed .

P.S: The ad for this event is on Page 3 in Bangalore Times today, its specially mentioned that acoustics have been taken care of ...hmmm so they care about sound quality

Yup, Pt Rajan& sajan Misra are indeed masters;Kadri Gopinath & R majumdar-KG is rooted in the Carnatic Classical Music tradition while RM follows the North Indian Clasical system-they would prob attempt a fusion music sort of thing, like Ganga meets Cauvery etc. Rimpa Siva was a tabla child prodigy-don't know how she's developed.
Do give your feedback, and have fun.

These are all news to me and infact good news after all. I am getting all pumped up now...the fact that I dont even know what to expect from such a concert but now aware that all the performers are masters in their own field gives some kind of gooselings under the butt

Are they going to perform using a PA system or without it?

PA system could kill half the life of music

Buddy, dont know whether PA or not but it will be definitely amplified without which they just cant be audible to almost 4000 people (full capacity) in the stadium (its an indoor stadium). Hope the amplification and speakers are decent enough.

Hey thats the last thing to worry about. if you want to get Audiophilic about it then the Room acoustics would be more to worry about than the PA system.

But if you get into that mode any music enjoyment cells would be killed..so leave Audiophilli for the equipment at home

If you have a choice,Try to see if you can get to the middle to the front though and away from the walls

Poor gooselings!
AP, obviously you have no exposure to Idian Classical music-well, its time to broaden your horizons.
Do go with an open mind-this will be unlike what you have experienced till date, but will be exhilarating.
Remember, its a highly respected genre of music worldwide, and, its in your roots.
Happy listening, & do share your experience.

Hi Kamal,
Its one of the most surprising co-incidence that I was looking around for some good Indian classical music CDs just to get initiated into this genre. In fact I was about to post a thread in the forum to help me find some good Indian classical albums and look at it, around the same time this concert came around and I was happy . What better way to get initiated to a genre than a live performance. Initially I thought I am taking a risk because I didnt know any of the performers...but now I feel relaxed because they seem to be really well known in the community. That definitely increased my curiosity manifolds.

Arj,
I am definitely not getting picky about the sound quality and all that...but when I think of PA, I get the feeling of "LOUD" chaotic music....thats something I would hate in this case. I am definitely going there with an "open mind".

Will keep you all posted about the experience.

Hi Abhi,
How did the concert go? The Mishra brothers are too accomplished to comment on I suppose, its the saxophone performance that I am interested in. Heard him on CD once. The sound recording was terrible, and the playing quite unimpressive. After listening to the likes of Coltrane and Coleman, Kadri's sax was amateurish and unimaginative, on that cd at any rate. How did you rate the live performance. It is exiting to have western instruments making inroads into our music, but like with the violin it will I suspect take some time before a truly outstanding performer and a real playing style will emerge. Over to you.

Hi buddies,
Apologies to keep you waiting for a feedback...
I was totally stuck in some other work for the last 2 weeks.
Now that I have some breathing space, I need to recollect my experience a bit.

To start off, it was a mixed-bag of Ok, Good, and Great.
I have never involved (or even tried to involve) myself into classical music so much before this event. This was the very first time I was prepared to give a it a full-blown shot and listen everything thats being played (whether I like it or not).
The show started with the Misra Brothers performing Hindustani classical Raagas. Hmmm....it was greek to me all the while but I was able to appreciate the command they have on their vocal chords. My wife was with me, trying to understand atleast something. But she was more surprised that I am listening to classical music with all that enthu... .
To be frank the Misra brothers were too professional to draw a newbie like me into their world. May be if they could have sung a more popular (yet classical) song/dhun, I would have been more "in-there".

Then it was the turn of the Saxophone and Flute maestros (Padmashri Kadri Gopalnath & Pandit Ronu Majumdar)
to perform a Jugalbandi. I didnt know what to expect but had an open mind. My wife had closed her mind by then .
But as the performers gained momentum, it was claps all around and the stadium was filled with energy. Even my wife was thrilled with what she was hearing..."Live Instruments" woah!!!! Though Kadri Gopalnath is a more famed artist and a senior musician I and my wife liked Ronu Majumdar on flute better. It looked like Ronu had that agility and extra bit of command on the flute which was fun to watch. He switched flutes in between the notes..that was nice.
Overall a much more frolic experience than the first part.

Purnendu, I have little experience in this domain so really cant say if KadriJi was amateurish. But when you the instruments live it really draws you in even if the performer is just about decent...and that happened.

The last part of the show was a solo Tabla performance by Rimpa Siva but we had to miss that part because it was already too late and we had too head home. The show started off late so it ended late as well.

Overall an ear-opener...now I do have a idea, which area of classical music I enjoy and what I dont. But one thing is evident that one needs time to appreciate this genre. You may like it but you will love it when you are able to appreciate it in true sense.

Chalo, a good start.
try listening to some semi classical genres like thumris, ghazals, dhuns and also euphonic instruments such as santoor, sitar, flute( which you liked) sarod.
Classical music, like drinking beer , is an acquired taste; but once you get into it, it will give you pleasure of a very high order.
