I thought I’ll start a thread on sourcing LP’s in India. This is for people on a budget who want to enjoy LP’s. It may also help people join the LP bandwagon.

We will try to address the following issues.

1. How to source them on a low budget (200 to 400 bucks per LP)
2. Physical condition of the used imported LP’s.
3. Typical hassles you may face when you import them.
4. Any customs issues ?
5. Best practices.

1. Ask people. You'll be surprised how many have an old collection they never got rid of - stashed somewhere.

2. Go to Kolkata: I got my LPs at 30 bucks a piece. You might not get exactly what you're looking for. But you can discover some real gems.

3. The net. Musicdirect.com, acousticsounds.com...

Hi !

I have a strange question:

I don't have a turn-table & I don't have a single LP. But I'm curious. Is it worth embarking on this journey?

Dear Doc,

I have both Vinyl and CD systems, main reason why I am with vinyl is because I do have a good collection of music that I love on Lp's.

Yes the LP's can sound good if you have the right set up.

Starting a fresh on vinyl is your very personal wish, listen to a good LP play back system and take a call

I will put it in a different way. Have you ever felt the need of a large format film camera, the one with shift and tilt adjustments?

If the answer to above is yes most probably you may like vinyl too

Regards
Anil

Thanks Ani !

How much do I drool for a large format camera ! But I can neither afford nor do I really need.

Regarding vinyl, I can afford to add a turntable to my system but the question is availability of software - finding specific albums & good recordings even in CDs is not easy. So I guess I will leave this fancy alone....

Within India, starting out on a vinyl journey now is difficult. Like doc so rightly pointed out, you can get the best hardware but records are hard to come by and what you do get are old/used and not very well kept. However, you get good quality used and new vinyl in US and other countries. I try to get as many as I can when I travel.

If you are in Mumbai, there are a couple of places that sell old records, I know of one. I know a guy in Delhi who can source stuff in any genre and ship it across to you. He's a bit expensive though (usually ranging from 400 to 2.5K). I can put you through to him if interested. He currently has a bunch of classic film music on sale.

Keep a lookout for classifieds in papers, I got some good deals from there.

On the net, ebay.in usually has some LPs on sale mostly around Rs. 500-600. Go to movies and music > music > other formats

Internationally, try elusivedisc.com, they have a good range of records that are reasonably priced. They incidentally are also the exclusive JVC XRCD distributors.

you can also try vinyltom (http://www.vinyltom.com/news/english/index.htm). Its a little difficult to get stuff from them but they have a pretty good collection.

If you are in CA, try Ameoba or Rasputin. They have a very good collection of used and new.

sorry for that dumb question!!
I had no idea that these 2 stores were so widely distributed! I was in San Jose in September & I did have some time to kill after the day's work. Gosh, I wish I knew about these stores, I would have paid them a visit each day I was there!!!
next time I'm CA, I will not make this mistake again!!!

Very good topic indeed for vinyl lovers. I'm particular in collecting Bollywood Vinyls only of R.D.Burman.

I'm based in Kolkata, India and found most of my collections in Wellington Area near Hind Cinema and Free School Street. They are priced between Rs. 100 to Rs. 2000.

If somebody is interested in Bollywood Old Classics then try

http://www.bollywoodvinyl.com/

They can ship your choice but very highly priced.

My set up for vinyl is

Pioneer Turntable XL-99 with Shure Cartidge thru Sonodyne Uranus 2.

Yes Shahrukh always I try to do that. But As I collect rare LPs of R.D.Burman, it costs more. Recently I bought 'PANTERA' an album of R.D.Burman with Jose Flores ( which is very very rare to find) I had to pay 2,000 bucks. Now I'm lookin for Dil Padosi Hai ( Asha Bhosle / Gulzar / R.D.Burman ) which costs nearly 3,500 bucks in the market if available. Believe me people are ready to pay that amount.

It's true that common albums are still available at 30 - 50 bucks range.

Hi Abhi,

Dil Padosi Hai is available in Audio CD but PANTERA is not. Last September I was in Sanfrancisco and madly searched Pantera ( which was released in SFO by Roco LP in 80's ) in downtown but failed to get.

DPH is avl in CD and I have that but having LP is another height.

Rare RDB LP's are very highly priced. Try

http://www.bollywoodvinyl.com/. You will have an idea abt those prices. Even unreleased songs of RDBurman are selling ( source not known) at high prices.
