It's that time of the year, when the Yatra/Utsav happens.I almost missed the Utsav last year, simply b'cos the newspapers did not bother to talk about it.

Does anyone have any information on when it's scheduled for and who is playing this year ?

Hi !

I'm just about begining to enjoy Jazz. And all that I have in the name of Jazz is Diana Krall, Frank Sinatra and a compilation of jazz from Barrista.

Can you recommend some really good Jazz music?

Hi Arj,
Yes It's usually held in B'bay and Delhi over three days.

Last year there were performances by Jonas Hellborg,Charlie Mariano and Mynta among others.

...and you know what the best part was.It was for Free.

Doc,
Jazz is today a very broad term.Do check out a separate thread in this section for recos.

Personally, I'd advice you to perhaps download a few MP3 tracks and decide on what suits you.

Any idea when is this event held in Delhi. Listening to live performances is totally different from listening to recordings.

And if its free i'll make sure that i'm there

Thanks.. but isnt mynta more of a fusion group than Jazz ?
I have their album (first song is first summer) and really liked their stuff.. pretty decent recording too. enjoyed shankar mahadevans experimentation, a true global artist.

hey doc, jazz unfortunately cannot really be defined as it has a huge range these days.

what you have mentioned above is more of vocals. if that is good for you try a french mme called Madeleine Peyroux.. she has an album called dreamland

There is a huge collection of instrumental jazz available which may be impossible to list, but if possible, Telarc has a 2 cd sampler which is a good insight into the huge range in it and could be a good starter.

else am sure everyone here could put in a list of their fav cds and you could just download some stuff on mp3 to see what you like before you start buying ?

to me the Ray Brown trio has always been a favourite. if you can get hold of a series called
"some of my good friends are" and it has the ffollowing subsets in my order of reference
- Sax players
- Guitarists
- Pianists
- singers
some more which i dont have

its really good !

also the ray brown trio has another cd called Superbass2 again very good.

again the choice i really too varied and there are many sects and subsects in it the only commonality is that they are usually foot tapping with some pretty good improvisation.

See now that's the thing.

The Jonas Hellborg Trio were really playing heavy metal kinda music.Think Shawn Lane,Mike Stern, early Mahavishnu or Al dimeola.

I loved it.But then I like all kinds of stuff.

Mynta played a totally inspired set. They were on fire...

On the other hand the Charlie Mariano trio was a totally different experience.

...and that's why I make it a point to attend the yatra every year.I can think of no other music festival here in India, where one gets to hear such diverse, yet totally awesome music. That too for free.

Hi Krish,

I haven't heard anything about the Jazz Yatra yet. Let me talk to one of the organizers here, to see if they've set any dates.

A good, "free" introduction to jazz can be had by tuning in to RIFF on WorldSpace!
