New Line Cinema has hired British director Iain Softley (The Skeleton Key) to helm its family fantasy Inkheart for an Easter 2007 release, reports Variety. Playwright David Lindsay-Abaire signed last year to write the big screen adaptation of German author Cornelia Funke's fantasy novel.
Inkheart, which spent 19 weeks on the New York Times Children's Chapter bestseller list, revolves around a girl whose father has the power to bring characters from books to life by reading aloud. When a villainous ruler and his band of rogues from a children's fable kidnap the man, his daughter and her friends -- both real and imaginary -- must rescue him.
Softley hopes to start shooting the film in the spring or early summer.
"What attracted me was the central idea of the power of imagination," he said. "There's an unlikely cooperation between a very disparate group of characters helping to reunite a family."
Inkheart is viewed as a potential multi-installment fantasy franchise for New Line, along with its development project The Golden Compass, to be directed by Anand Tucker based on the "His Dark Materials" trilogy by Philip Pullman.

Wie der "Hollywood Reporter" meldet, wurde mit Brendan Fraser ("Die Mumie", "Nachts im Museum") der erste Hauptdarsteller von Cornelia Funkes "Tintenherz"-Verfilmung unter Vertrag genommen.

Fraser wird die Rolle des Mortimer "Mo" Folchart spielen, also den Vater der Hauptfigur Meggie.
Regie bei der Beststeller-Verfilmung wird Iain Softley ("K-Pax") führen.
