Hi guys

Just opened up this old arphi 60x2 watts amp I used to use upto about 10 yrs ago, out of sheer curiosity. It was a real sweet sounding transistor amp. No edgyness at all. It is black with the same chasis as the pulz stereo amps. Some things never change :-)

To my surprise I saw a torroid transformer. Neatly laid out components (don't know if its a pcb or a hardwired board, there is a 2-3mm layer of dust on it so can't make out).

Apart from the uptron caps I saw ones made by websen(isn't this the company that makes electro's under license from rubycon?).

Very ordinary carbon pots. I am sure nothing works now since its all under a ton of dust.

Now guys, this amp has amazing memories associated with it so I want to know if can be resurrected or should I strip out the parts and keep the torroid and chasis for later ?

And Aks, since you know a whole lot about old indian amps...your pearls of wisdom ?

Hi,

Hmm good to know you have kept them for all these years !!

Neatly laid out components (don't know if its a pcb or a hardwired board, there is a 2-3mm layer of dust on it so can't make out).

Manek I've not seen a SS Amp or pre hardwired !! its in all probability a PCB !

The Caps that you mention was infact the rubycon Avataars (Webson or Webelson were the license holders )

I know the feeling ! So I will strongly Recommend you to get it serviced or if are one of Us (the DIY folks) then get your hands dirty and make it happen !

If not for anything else you can perhaps use it for some bedroom or a small study room purposes !

Again if you are the adventurous Kind,Then get the Caps replaced with some good make (as anyhow they would've lost the charge ), you can try Panasonic FC series for a budget yet super sound ones, or the Nichicon Muse !

If you really don't mind the cost then the Blackgates and the Elna for Audio is the one's !!

Alternatively you can choose to replace the Pots with some Alps ones ! Money no bar ? the Alps Black Beauty or Velvet is the best choice !

Rest should be good enough ! but still another mod is to change all the resistors to the Vishay/Dale or Halco one's ! Vishay is bit cheaper but sonically good (I think you know bout these things ) !

Anyways I given my feedback on this ! Hope it makes some sense !!

Let me know your thoughts on the same !

Regards.

Manek, you just might be assuming too much!
Use a clean paint brush to dislodge the dust & a canister type vacuum cleaner (which usually have a long pipe to the vacuum cleaning attachment) to suck out the dust.
Use some Caig ProGold on the pots & get them making better (good?) electrical contact. Check the fuse. Check the chassis ground connection.
Power the amp up & see whether it plays or not - it might & then, it might not.
Once you ascertain for sure what the present status of the amp is, make an appropriate restoration plan.

Since the amp has such fond memories, I would say that this alone is reason enough to resurrect the amp.

I am not heavily into diy but don't mind getting my hands dirty :-) I just shouldnt mess it up further....:-) any accidental fireworks would tick off the missus and probably put an end to my project ! Got to obey the ground rules !

Btw the caps are "websen". They are still available cause I saw then at a shop recently. No website though :-( anyone used them ? If so how would you rate them ?

Bombaywalla, it needs a lot of work from the looks of it.

I will clean it up thoroughly first and then decide on the action plan. Will use the lightbulb method to try and slowly bring it back to life.

Hi,

Glad to hear that Manek ! Don't worry I don't think you can have fireworks !

Moreover you are a guy with lot experience with using them and I think you know far too well to do some silly mistakes ! But yeah The Ground Rules,Have to adhere to them !!

Bout the Caps, Manek as far as my knowledge goes they should be some old stock ! coz they stopped them some years ago and I haven't seen them since !

I have used them in some of my earlier projects,Nothing to write home bout ! just your average quality one's !

Yes please clean it thoroughly and see the result ! the Bulb trick is very very novel !

Try it out and let Us know the result so that we can suggest your next move ! Also if possible please do post some pics of it so that we can see the actual condition and things !

Regards.
