Folks,

Just completed building my pair of Sachikos with
Fostex FE206E drivers. They are the first speakers
I have built, and in fact, my first significant
carpentry work too.

The drivers have just a couple of hours on them, but
they sound pretty good.
An excellent design by Scott Lindgren (scottmoose).

I built them with marine ply, and finished with
a walnut stained polish and a couple of coats of
Touchwood (clear polyurethane). Used Fevicol glue.
As I didn't have any clamps, used screws to hold
the joints close, or some heavy stones.

The source is an old Koss DVD player and the amp is
the LM3886 Mauro Penasa design I posted earlier.
Speaker cables made from Cat 5 cable.

I am waiting for the drivers to get broken in (min of
150 hours suggested for the Fostex FE206E), so I can
tweak the amount of stuffing in the driver chamber.

Here is the photo build log.

Hi,

Looking very good ! Congrats on a fine build !! did you manage to all or hired a carpenter for help ? in any case job well done !!

By now how many hours the Amp themselves have ?? coz that will contribute to the overall sound !

The design is a solid one ! and should give a exemplary results !!

Btw I would strongly recommend against using the CAT5 speaker cable that you are using now !

Regards.

Thanks!

The polishing was done by a painter.
Everything else, I managed to do. Lots of learning along
the way, including even how to use the power circular saw.
Had some help from a relative
of mine, which was really a god send.
It is hard to do this size/complexity of speaker alone.

If I ever build another speaker, I will get the ply sheets
cut on a good table saw. This gives very precise cuts.
I should say my diy rip fence was not very accurate - partly
my fault, as my first cuts were my very first time
using a power saw. Made mistakes.

By now how many hours the Amp themselves have ?

I hardly used the amp after making it. So it might have
max about 5 to 10 hours on it.

I am curious about your comment on Cat5 cables. Lots
of people on the net seem to recommend it.
Anyway, will try to get hold of some good (not Monster!)
cable and try.

Prasad

Hi,

Good to hear the details ! yeah doing all alone is not an easy task, especially if you are in India, where for the smallest thing you have to die to procure it !! it surely is a learning process !!

Yeah Buddy on contrary to what they say,I have made the speaker cables with the said CAT5 cable and was not very impressed with the sound ! The lowend was a major disappointment and was less as much as 30% compared to a standard cable !! The highs were the only thing that was acceptable to me with these cables !

Not only me I have seen some of my friends try and have the same result ! its partly coz of the default braiding pattern and the shielding,I even pulled all the wires from the CAT5 and individually braided them and checked the results, although it was better then the stock but still nowhere close to ideal ! another major issue with these type of cables are the capacitance, they are very high in them and hence some of the Amp may oscillate due to this !!

So with all the above experiment I suggested you !! I have done many such speaker cable projects and have been able to Beat CHORD Silverscreen and other on a one to one comparison test !! So I do have some experience when say this !!

Regards.

Hi,

During a recent trip to Hyderabad,I had the pleasure of listening to Prasad's(Quadtech) speakers and his KT77 based amp.

First off the quality of his workmanship is top notch.

The sound quality of his set up despite the limitations of the front end(a portable CD/DVD player) is very good.

Though the speakers are over six feet tall they do not take up a lot of floor space and the foot print is not too big.

The double horn loaded cabs give the added weight and solidity to the bass which is often lacking in smaller cabinets using similar drivers. The bass is fast and tight without any overhang or blurring. Vocals are to die for and the midrange simply gorgeous. The highs are smooth and to my ears the extention seemed OK,but others might find it a little rolled off.

This system is very musical and involving.I stopped trying to listen for flaws and just enjoyed myself listening to the music.

It was a pleasure meeting with Prasad and listening to his lovley system.

Regards
Rajiv

Rajiv,

Thanks for posting your impressions and the kind
words on my work.

It was a pleasure to have you here and get your feedback.

My next task is to work on the limitations of my
setup - frontend, speaker cables etc.

CONGRATS ! Quadtech.

For Whatever Its Worth, my personal experience ( contrary to gut feel) is that Interconnects influence the sound much more than Speaker Cable.

I would suggest addressing the Interconnects, before the Speaker Cables....
