Hi everyone,

I had been listening to Sennheiser HD580s till now, but for some reason, wasn't highly impressed. Maybe I'm just not a headphone person. So I sold them off, and am now looking for some speakers. Here are the parameters -
a> I don't have a huge budget. Actually, its under 15K for spks and amp.
b> They need to be nearfield spks. They'll be just 3 feet from me, with less than 3 feet between them.
c> I use my computer as a source. I have the M-Audio Revolution soundcard, which is supposed to be better than most entry level cd-players. I was initially considering the Altec Lansing MX5021 speakers. These are the only good computer spks. They are quite accurate, but still, I feel I can do a lot better.

So, I was wondering if I should get some custom speakers made. Would it be possible in my budget and space constraints?

Can anyone point me to someone who makes custom speakers? In mumbai. From what little auditioning I've done, I found out that I prefer highly musical speakers, with a lush midrange. Something like the Quad bookshelves. Ohhh, I wish I could afford them

So, any suggestions for a budding audiophile?

Thanks in advance.

I just went thru the " What do you look for in a Loudspeaker" thread, and I'm definitely in the "anything that makes my foot tap" camp.

Any suggestions? Guys? comeon......

Simple.
Norge stereo amp and norge bookshelf speakers if you want new.

You could buy a new norge amp and get used bookshelf speakers from wharfedale etc.. for the same budget.

If you can get hold of some 92 db plus bookshelf speakers, you could get a T-Sonic digital amp and power supply for around 3000 bucks and party.

Thanks for the reply, square_wave. But my main concern is, will norge, wharfedale etc work in the nearfield?

And is the T-sonic available in mumbai?

All monitor size bookshelf speakers should work in near field. I feel a 92 db plus speaker plus the sonic amp should float your boat. You may have to import the T-sonic amp. I don’t think anybody sells it in India. Or you could pm deaf and ask him about the new deal..:-))

Hi Zhopudey,
Dont lose heart because you are not getting enough replies....be sure that in India there is hardly any other forum which can give you more info on products available in India.....so you are on track.

My take is...

Wharfdale Diamond 8.1/9.1 (whichever you like)
Norge Integrated amp.....

You should get this combo in under 17k....good sound at entry level.

I agree with abhi.pani. This is a decent combo.

OR

a complte Norge setup which isn't half bad.

OR

You spend a lil more and do the wharfies with a Pulz pre-power setup. I dunno how the Pulz spkrs are though. Our buddy Neutral could fill you on those.

Thanks guys I'm going to audition the Sanen speakers today. Will get back to you tonight.

Any tips for auditioning? I hope the salesmen at Sanen are not like the ones in normal electronic shops

Had a very brief audition at Sanen. They have a EX4 for around 9K,with curved side panels (wharfedale evo? ) and a smaller Wonder-6 for 6K. They had these connected to a yahama reciever, thru a Sony DVD player. There was only one salesman when I went there, who didn't seem to know much about anything.
The audio CDs were CD-Rs, probably made from mp3. He put in Enigma. Well, these bookshelves certainly sounded much fuller than my current PC speakers The bass also seemed quite decent. But there seemed to be a very slight hiss in the sound. The smaller wonder-6 sounded a bit thinner, and with less bass (obviously).

I was going to stay around and ask some more questions, when the salesman said two things which turned me off.

1> He suggested buying their HTiB set, as it'll give more effect.
2> He said the wonder-6 has kevlar drivers (great!), which can't be cut even if sliced by a blade! Why would I ever do that!!!!

He said he can get a norge amp for about 8-9K. I told him I'll come back with my own CDs.

hi dude.. take ur own fav CDs for auditioning... that helps and see if it makes ur foot tap first.. the moment of decision is fleeting.. but u will know it wen it strikes..
try as many spkrs as possible and go 2-3 times also..
my recommendation - wharfedale 9.1 with Pulz (no remote!!)- havent heard Norge so cant comment!

Have fun

if your friends coming from the US then ask him to get a decent entry level integrated like the nad 320bee, cambridge audio, etc. They are available quite at bargain. Secondly the nad 320bee is now being replaced by the 325bee so he may just find a very good bargain for you. make sure it is a 220V model.

I thought about that, but it'll be too big. Won't fit in his luggage. The T amp seems very small, and lightweight.

I also thought about that. But since I'm totally new to this, how can I tell if the spks and amp are in good condition?

Apart from that, where do I start looking?

I have a Creative Inspire 2.1 2500 set of speakers connected to my lap top at work.

I bought them for about 1900 bucks at Lamington road.

For the price,I think they are fantastic.

See if this works for you.

Else the Norge option is good.BTW his basic amp 25W + 25W goes for as little as 2500 bucks I think. He also has some small cube speakers, which again if I'm not mistaken are fairly cheap.

Cheers

Ummmm...krish, the Altec MX5021s I was initially considering are in an entirley different league from the creatives. And I'm not speaking about onboard sound either. My sound card is better than most entry level CD players.

I've heard the more expensive speakers from both Altec/Lansing and JBl.Trust me, mine are as good.

Now ofcourse I'm not comparing them to a separate stereo system and I'd never in a million years think of getting rid of my hifi and replacing them with this.

But they do the trick for me at the office.

Cheers

Hmmmm, I've decided to drop this bookshelves idea for the time being. I've bought the Altec mx5021 for now. And I'll save up for few months, then think about the bookshelves.

The Times AV Expo is in October. I should be able to audition many brands in one day there.

And deaf, I am still waiting fo your "killer" budget brand. Pls keep me updated.
