Hi,
The fuse to one of my stereo amplifiers has blown. The amp is an old Marantz pm63. I know for sure the fuse has blown since it doesn't pass any current and on close examination the glass casing has been blackened. The fuse specification is T1.6L 250V.

Can anyone let me know where I can find this? Is it commonly available? I have asked in a few neighbouring shops and they don't seem to have any idea. Also info specific to shops in Mumbai would be highly appreciated since I am based here.

Regards,
Pranab

Hi !

You may contact Rupam at 9811699689, 41745451/2 Delhi - the authorised importer of Marantz in India - he should be able to help.

Got a 1.5Amp cartridge fuse(with the glass casing found in most spike busters). I fit that into the slot and connected the amp. Immediately the fuse blew up. Am i reading this right or is there some other problem with the amp?

Please check the current ratings of your amp or power consuption rating and then convert that to the current drawn. The fuse needs to just little higher than that value. Or check the recommended fuse specs. Also check that the speaker cables are not getting short.

Hi Ronnie,

Sometimes fuses blow due to simple aging or a power spike.

However, more often than not, a fuse blows because something i9n the amp has failed, and the fuse prevents further damage or even a fire.

I suspect that in your case, your Amp actually need repairs.... to an extent more than a simple fuse replacement.

The 1.5 Amp replacement fuse that you inserted is more or less OK, and certainly should not have blown on switch on.

If you still want to be 100% sure, replace with a 2.5 ampere fuse. If that too blows, take yr amp for repairs.

All the best.

Hi Amp Nut,

From what I understand, slow-blow fuses should be used in amps. Otherwise, the starting current is high enough to blow a normal fuse, even though the running current is a lot lower.

I agree that it is wise to consider servicing the amp. The last thing I would want is blown transistors.

ronnie make sure u use a slow blow fuse...
and as amp nut suggests use a 2.5amp one or whatever the original is rated at..

I agree that Slow blow fuses are best, especially for amps with LARGE transformers.

They are also difficult to get...

However, an excessively choosen Slow Blow Fuse is effectively a No Blow Fuse ! Dangerous.

The Marantz pm63 is not particularly known for any Huge switch on surge.... not of the extent that a 2.5 amp Fast Blow fuse can sustain.

Yes, Shailesh and Savyasachi. Both of you have pointed out something that I happened to find in my reseach yesterday. That a slow blow(time delay) fuse is what is needed and not a fast-blow one. I had used the fast-blow one which is what is usually available in the market. However the original fuse which had blown is a time-delay one.

The Marantz is a 2nd hand amp that I had purchased for cheap last year just to see the difference an amp can make compared to the Nad c320 I was using. And with the speakers that I had built it made a huge difference. It was like chalk and cheese. The soundstage widened up. Voices sounded more realistic. Drums and cymbals were sounding so much better. I had paid 20K for the NAD and was hugely disappointed that a 10-year old(atleast) amp procured at a fourth of the price beat it so convincingly. The NAD was really good at the slam-bang stuff but since I was unable to biamp my speakers, I preferred the Marantz in my primary system.

When I did biamp my speakers to the Marantz (Nad I had not), the speakers sounded very different. At first I disliked the new sound but on extended hearing I liked the openness in the music.

Thats the reason why I really don't want to go back to the NAD. In a few months time I am looking at a better Amp and CDp but for the time being I didn't want to lose out on the Marantz.

Any ideas on where I can get this amp serviced in Mumbai?
The specifications are 80 watts but the nadc320 has more juice than the marantz. Incidentally it was working fine till a week back. I had biamped it only a couple of months back and maybethat is what caused the amp to blow its fuse.

Regards,
Pranab
