I never have the grilles on so a thin film of dust has settled on them.

depends on what the composition of the cone is..most do not take kindly to water and definitely not ot any solvents.

Dry soft cloth usually works used lightly..but better speak to Siva on his recommendation as it can be very Woofer specific !

What about a small/mini blower (something used to clean electronics). I think that should do the trick

or what about using a soft brush.

I wonder if playing them loudly would not get the dust off!

Use a paint brush ... about 2 inches wide, as used for painting walls.

I prefer to select a stiff brush, or trim the bristle lemght, to make it more stiff.

The white Nylon bristle Paint brush is pretty stiff and nice.

The brush is a Wonderful cleaner not only for Speaker cones, but also inside amplifiers, CD players etc.

For Crevices, use a soft tooth brush. GREAT to dig dust out from Grooves in the front or side panels, or around Knobs and buttons....

Hi !

Try using a blower brush. You could buy one from a camera shop - one used to clean lenses.

I like Purnendu's idea - play it loud to scare the dust away

I have a question too - I'm always scared of the occasional rats in the house. My down -firing Sub seems precariously within the reach of the mighty mouse. So far so good but how to prevent the rats from feasting on the Low Cal (read frequency) diet?

Sanjay

I was thinking a softer brush would make it more safe than a stiff one....basically to avoid scratches on the cone...

Sorry, I was Assume ing ( Ass-u-me ing ) a paper cone.

A Non wire brush would be OK for a paper cone....

I use a make-up brush, they have very soft bristles so you don't run the risk of damaging the cone. You can also use a piece of velvet or a soft hair shaving brush.

Blowing out the dust using a small blower is a good idea too. You just need to be careful that you don't blow them into the crevices.

What can’t harm the delicate female skin can’t harm the woofer right ?? Good logic..……..I can’t wait to see the look on my girlfriend’s face when I am confronting those woofers with a L’Oreal brush !

If you really wanna play with fire, take her to the beauty shop and pick up the most expensive brush...then tell her that its actually for your speakers...

If the speaker has a metal grill in frint which can't be easily removed, then the best option would be a blower;if you have a vcuum cleaner, there shoud be an attachment with a small nozzle which can be used; just use the least amt of air pressure/keep the nozzle at a distance and then checking from time to time, vary the pressure/distance.
One has to do this cleaning off& on to avoid build up of hard dust deposits( it hardens post the humid season).
As for the colour change, most prob its due to direct or even indirect sunlight It happened with my woofers also till i started covering them up when not in use, and drawing curtains to make sure that sunlight direct/reflected never falls on the cones, otherwise after some time it could degrade the material of the cone & importantly, of the surround material.
If the grill can be taken off, a clean(no make up residue!) soft makeup brush is the best since it wont scratch the cone-I snitched my wifes brush and I feign innocence whenever she puzzles as to where it has gone!( women are not very sensitive to the fact that speaker cones are more important!)
Dr Sanjay, and all others too, plz make it a practice to cover up the speakers( plastic covers are best since cloth covers retain dust) when not in use;ours is a dusty climate & prevention is always good. For the down firing subwoofer, you could use something to fill the gap between the floor & the S/W cone when not in use, e.g.a peice of sponge/ foam,Inverted shallow plastic tray whivch would fill the gap yet not press against the driver etc

Thanks Kamal,

I used a compact vaccum cleaner which had the option of attaching a nozzle to the back of it and use it as a blower.

Atleast 50% of the dust came off but the rest are still resting as you said might be due to the humid conditions and since i havent cleaned it since i bought it so it must have really hardened it.

Use surf excel with lots of water, that will really clean it up .But seriously, use your own fingers very lightly on the cone, and do not touch the dust cap.

Deaf,he has a metal grille which he cant remove easily to get at the cones-surf would sure do the trick but we would have to run for our lives when he views the results !
Seriously, Sunil, just repeat the blower thing a few times-you could try it while playing some bass heavy stuff- the vibrations could help dislodge the stubborn stuff.

what'il happen if we attach the vaccumcleaner tube to the front..

It'll clean the driver completly making it invisible as it'll suck the cones from the basket

Jokes apart! i think that wont help as the metal grille cannot be removed and the distance wont allow the vaccum cleaner to remove the dust as efficently.
