Which ten cds will you take with you if you were to be stranded in an island for a couple of years with only your music system and no women………….

You must see this movie "Cast Away" starring Tom Hanks....

....I'm sure you'll nevere ask a question like that..

just one Simon and Garfunkle single - Homeward bound

i am sure you are not interested in questions like where is the electricity for the Music system going to come from or would you rather use the batteries for a lamp rather than for music

with all that time in my hands perhaps would prefer in making a musical instrument and perhaps learn to play it rather than listen to cds

but again music might perhaps be the last thing on my mind

I would prefer some audio lectures.

1. How to grow food on a desert island.
2. How to generate electricity on a desert island.
3. How to tame wild animals on a desert island.
4. How to earn millions while you're on a desert island.
5. How to build a mansion on a desert island.
6. How to find domestic help on a desert island.
7. How to attract hot women to a desert island.
8. How to set up a sat-link station on a desert island.
9. How to mantain your health on a deset island.

And last but not least
10. How to escape from a desert island.

Then again, once I'm thru the first 9 cds, maybe I wouldn't feel like leaving

I remmebr only one song of rebecca. i heard that at Jochen's place.

And the MAnger test disc...
i have heard the Wilson Audio test disc, wonder if the pressing of the Manger is better?

I think you would remember the song "The Raven" which it the most popular in her album. it is a nice album

if you like cheskys recording you should also listen to a rendition of Isnt she lovely by Livingston Taylor. The album is called Ink.

touching a good test of your speakers ability to handle dynamism in the midrange

Chris Rea - Road to Hell

very pleasantly surprised to find this there! i love his voice as well.

ok let me list my top ten er rather playing 11 with the 12th man and get into the "spirit" of the thread rather than making wisecracks

The album I like a lot is The Raven - 3 tracks are great. Grandmother [5], You got me [6], Kalerka [1].
Good CD for Female Vocal testing.

About 15 to 17 US $'s + Shipping. But I buy from Tower Records - cheaper option. Choose & keep on wish list, get discount coupon & then buy.

I like the Manger a lot. The Wilson Audio Test disc is average at best. The best one is from Tag McLaren Audio - a must have. Manger is good for the last trach - # 15 or 16 [I am not so sure now].

The other Test Disc to have is Burmester. Very very good. Highly Recommended.

I personally do not use the test track from known names such as Burmester, FIM, OPUS, etc.,

For me test track are those piece of music that i enjoy the most....and i think it has to be a unique and personal choice for anyone. Burmester test tracks are personal choice of those who chose it.....i prefer to have my own.

I will also encorage everyone to have thier own choice of test track ..which should be the music closest to your heart...only they can you truly make rational decision while judging a setup.

This is my thoughts & opinion.....i could to right to some..and wrong to some...so please do'nt jump on me

My personal choice would include a few Hindustani tracks by Hariprasad Churasia, Bhimshen...few Jazz from the (Bill Evans, Miles D & Ben Webster in particular)....and a few sensible tamil non-movie album from the likes of Hariharan.

Dear Arj
Sir Cliff and The Shadows(Hank is a unique guitarist, his guitar sounds so simple but still no one has come close to him, Mark Knopfler was able to come out with some ehat similar tone) happen to be my favs can spend rest of my life listening to their songs if allowed will watch the VHS tape of 1983 Birmingham Concert and the DVD's of The shadows farewell concert. 47 yrs in show biz and if he can still draw crowds there should be something in him or it must be the longer life expectancy of the human race of the last half a century

me too :)but i first heard it in the early 90s at college. she does have an unusual voice and not the usual rock ballad. the hit number ie betty davis eyes is quite memorable.how do i say it, it kind of grows on you !

Yes it was a great hit back then well I wasn't even born then nevertheless I got to know about her sometime early 2000 infact the other stuff by her is also excellent you must get her best of, I have them both on LP as well as CD.

Making music as far as I remember I got it from rhythm house nowhere close to 200-300 bucks I'm going to take a trip to Planet M asap and pick up everything they have from ECM at that price :).

I like coldplay(I have it on LP prefer parachute over Speed of light) I did kinda listen to NIN in my early college days though not anymore.

Well kamal to be honest I havent heard much of new indian filmy/pop/rock artists which are good enough to be taken seriously besides only one I can think of at the moment that would be RABBI super voice excellent control over his voice.

On the other hand I think I have finally got a hindi reference recording by Atif Aslum from the movie Bas Ek Pal, his voice is simply phenomenal the tone, control and the dynamic range he has to offer is simply unmatched by other hindi singers I know of, I guess being in pakistan and the sufi culture helps

The albums produced in india is over produced always without fail always overdone and the mainstream guys are just not up there with the artists I mentioned above I guess they would have to unlearn everything till date to reach a level to express emotion like the others do.

Of-course this is JUST MY OPINION.

The older hindi stuff is superb on the other hand with regards to lyrics and the story they had to tell which is a rarity these days, I listen to the older stuff because of my mum otherwise I guess I would never known and also have a fairly huge mono recordings on LP of them its damm good fun

Best regards,

Satyam.

Its amazing that almost 99% of the CDs/LPs mentioned are of "western" music.
I bet if you guys had to live in US for some years, you would ache to hear Hindi/Native tongue music!
Is there such a great diff in the recording quality that you are just not willing to consider some native stuff?
Even now, some pretty melodious music is being churned out by bollywood-even more so by non film music artists.
C'mon, widen your tastes!

Kamal,
The issue is definitely not the language. Art, music and beauty knows no boundaries. My main issue with mainstream native music is usually the arrangement. They are made keeping visuals (movies) in mind and it just gets on my nerves. And they use a lot of synthesized stuff in the music which I do not care for much. I respect Hindustani / carnatic classical and ghazals, sufi etc….but I never really got into such music. Although I respect such music, I never get to listen much.

square_wave is bang on with the problem of a lot of synth used in hindi music these days, yes its fun to a certain extent but one just cant take it seriously, I would listen to it on the radio or in the car but never would have the urge to put it in my setup at home.

I would listen to kishore kumar instead of some new charlie who is singing something that he absolutely doesn't believe in all the producers want just one thing either a cheesy remix or else a cheese on toast love song its the same plot always.

Yes I agree with you with regards to staying abroad then one would start to miss the filmy music I say this as I see a lot of my friends listen to below par stuff when they are down here but after a while when you get serious about it you realize its tooo monotonous I for one honestly look forward to good artists been given a chance but at the end of the day money talks shit walks.

Again this is just my opinion.

Regards,

Satyam.

Is there such a great diff in the recording quality that you are just not willing to consider some native stuff?
Even now, some pretty melodious music is being churned out by bollywood-even more so by non film music artists.
C'mon, widen your tastes!
Kamal

I think this is something very personal. These are all individual prefrences. Maybe if I live abroad I'd crave to listen to some desi stuff... but that has nothing to do with my current fav CDs.

But sometimes I crave for Indian music right here!
Last night I felt enough..so I listened to some qawali music. I drove around a lot today and listened only to Mohd Rafi cds on the car stereo.
It's what your mood tells you.

Hi !

For last few days I was trying hard to figure out which ten CDs to take along and which to leave behind ... to "travel light" to this "island" ....

I can't decide...no not which ones to take...but which ones to leave behind...

So I have decided to pack the following:

-Worldspace radio with 5 years subscription to "Gold Pack"
-A pack of long-life solar batteries

Guys please forgive me for breaking the rules. But please understand my plight... I will surely take along Beethoven, but I'm not willing to leave behind "Bunty and Bubbly". 30 days a month I like to hear "serious good music" but on the 31st day I have to hear something outlandish - because I feel so - and man there are 7 months in a year which have 31 days.

My dad got me hooked to the voice of Talat Mehmood & Begum Akhtar and my kids really made me enjoy "Dhoom", "Main Hoon Na", "Bunty & Bubbly", "Hanuman", etc. My mother tuned me into bhajans by Hari Om Sharan and my friends took me on the path of Hard Rock. I may have liked Western Classical of my own accord but wife really blackmailed me into liking "Romantic Songs". Not to forget that my nation beckons me to march to the tunes of patriotic songs and my Punjabi roots to its folk. And being "experimenting" that I am, there is a lot of "miscellaneous" stuff that I possess.

You see there are emotions attached with all genres of music. How can I pick one in favor of the other ? There IS so much to hear.....

BTW what equipment will you hear your Ten CDs on ?

Don't you worry, Kamal & myself are planning an audiophile meeting on this "island". Come over for a party
