I know that it is possible for me to copy my audio CDs and make copied audio CDs. But, as I have a large number of discs to backup, it would waste a lot of space.

Can I instead backup my audio CDs with full fidelity (as Wav files) on DVD-R? Would such DVDs play like audio CDs on a DVD player? Or would they only work on computers? Anybody with experience in making compact backups, please explain the process to me in some detail.

Nope, such a DVD would not work on a DVD player.

Rather sad! I will have to create a stack of CDs. Does anyone know why the CD Audio standard never got extended to DVDs? A DVD would have been a better medium of distribution - the entire works of an artist could be stored. If you like Diana Krall, you could pay Rs 1200 and have all her albums in one place, instead of struggling with 6 CDs, which would most probably get lost just when you need them.

i know
i have a 100GB 2.5" slim disk dedicated for backing up cds in lossless.am so scared of scarring some cds and rendering them useless with no replacement as many do not seem to be so easily available these days.

No, this will work if the DVD player supports mp3.

Hi!, then why will full-quality Wav files not work? If I buy a recent DVD player, will it play only MP3s, but not Wavs?

^^ Because wav and CD-Audio are two different things. A DVD with wav files will be written as a data CD, and will not be recognised by the dvd player. (Actually, even MP3s are written as data disk, but most new DVDPs can read mp3, as well as DivX and WMA.)
