Benks,

This is apparently a widely prevalent phenomenon, attributed to grounding problems, and does not seem to have any precise solution. I am not an electrical guy and hence cannot give you a qualified answer. However, I was able to get around a similar problem in my active speakers by switching them off only after the auto turn off located in the speaker amp had done its job. You could try the same.

I prefer keeping the low pass setting at around 50hz. You could try 50 to 60hz. Having done this, play a bass heavy track starting with the volume setting on minimum and increase slowly till you come to a point where it begins to get boomy. At this point turn it down a notch so that you don’t get any boominess.

Also, try out various locations, till you find the best one. Corners will re-inforce the bass, as you have discovered with your speakers, so if it gets too boomy, move it out a little.

Remember, quality bass is bass that is felt, ever so slightly, and not heard.

Cheers

ben,

since you have expenisive equipment in your home now....i suggest you call your local electrician and have all power points checked for Earthing. Make sure he tightens all wires inside the socket for proper electrical connection and make sure switches are in decent condition. If you have old wiring, maybe its time to chnage that one segment which you will use for audio.

If you are in a city besides bombay invest in a servo stabilizer.

I'm not saying it will solve your sub problem, just mentioning the precautions you can take to avoid damage to other stuff you have.

Manek.

ok. i think i got the crossover setting right. 60Hz phase reversed. this is on the receiver. the onboard crossover on the sub has been taken out of the loop by setting it to 150Hz.
i'll be getting the grounding wires checked tomorrow as the problem still exists.
but, u guys please clarify to me if its going to damage my sub if the problem persists.
thanks

the best thing to do is write to the manufacturer and ask him if the sub is supposed to do this and if not what could the issue be.

to be honest in the old days all amps power up would make the speakers go thump, I was also quiet disturbed about it and I would switch off the speaker selector switch. I would turn on the amp, wai 5 seconds and then switch on the speaker switch, that way I circumnavigated the problem.

Benks,

Have you checked connecting to other wall outlets? Does it go Thump with all of them?

Also, does the sub have an auto power on/off switch?

right, i took Manek's advise and wrote to definitive tech.
this is what they had to say.

Thanks for your recent email to Definitive Technology. The "thumping"
sound
heard when a ProSub100TL first receives electricity and stops receiving
electricity (or when it is turned on and off) is normal. It's not
"dangerous" and won't cause any harm to your subwoofer (I'm sure it's
annoying though.)

I'd recommend plugging your ProSub100TL into an "unswitched" outlet
that
receives AC power all the time (and leaving it turned on). This way
you
won't hear any popping or thumping when you turn your system on or off.
(Its auto on/off circuit will quietly turn the amplifier on and off.)

(The amplifier used in the ProSub100TL has a unique power supply that
draws
its power from the AC outlet as needed. It doesn't have a traditional
transformer and it doesn't' store its power on board. A draw back of
this
unique design is that it produces a transient when it first receives
electricity and when it stops receiving electricity.)

If you need any other information, please email me at
cpelkowski@definitivetech.com.

Thanks,
Chet Pelkowski

BTW, that's a roger to both ur questions big ears.
