Hi. This is not puchoo just a freinds of his.. my account is not working for some reason

PROBLEM ; - Have a Yamaha RXV 440 receiver but the volume output is not sufficient and at the same time i dont want to drive the receiver at full volume for risk of harm.

So was wondering if i can hook a pre amp to it to takle that problem... since the sound coming in will already be boosted then the yamha will or should be louder than before right?

If yes and accepted.. can u guys give me suggestions for a pre amp which hads enuf connections to incorporate a CD player , Turntable , Tape deck and possible a dvd.. so 4 Inputs essentially.

Regards

Adding a preamp would boost the signal but would it also boost distortion?

You might want to figure out why the volume level is too low.

Are you speakers extremely inefficient?
Are you trying to get loud levels in an extremely large room?
May be you can add an external Amp and use the Yamaha as a pre if it has pre-outs, of course.

Adding an external Amp might be more of a benifit than a pre.

my room is not that big at all... say 8*12.

My speakers are not iefficient either.. both rate of 90db and are extremely powerful.

The thing is that i had taken the entire system to play at a firends party.. speakers and receiver... ever since i got it back to my place and connected it seems to have lost some volume.. like i said very funny...

Adding a pre amp will increase distortion i agree but the wuestion is whethe it will be iwthin reasonable limits.

What exactly is an external amp? MY yamaha does not have a pre out unfprtunately.

Did you end up clipping your reciever and blow a voice coil on one of the drivers?

Throwing a pre-amp in to the mix without actually knowing the problem, is a path to financial ruin.

Figure out what happened to the system after the party before putting money down on a pre-amp.

Since you have a reciever adding a power amp might be a better bet ( external to the reciever) than a preamp but that is a moot point now.

As far as I know both a pre amp as well as a CDP output both are at qround 2 V levels. so in IMHO , adding a preamp will not boost the signal.

If you feel your speakers do not play loud enough i think it is the amp which must be changed

Also do not understand the fact as to why full volume will not drive the speaker .

if the speakees seem to have low volume since you brought it back, it could only mean something is loose or disconnected.Do you have this problem in both the speakers ?

Clipping usually means your reciever is having a tough time driving the speakers and can cause a surge and damage the speakers.

One thing that might have happened is your placment might have changed since you moved it. Placement can have pronounced effects on the sound your speakers generate.

If you have them closer to room boundries than you did before you moved it to your friend's place the bass might be enhanced. But from what you are saying it is quite possible that the bass is overpowering your mids and highs. This could lead you into percieving the sound as lower in volume.

Move the speakers around and see if things change. Move them a little forward into the room and away from the wall, and also out od corners and study how the sound changes. Find a good place where the bass, imaging, mids and highs are balanced.

The moral of the story is don't take your home system to a party. Home hifi systems don't make good PA systems. Professional grade amps have cooling fans on them to deal with heat issues and the speakers usuall are horn loaded and ultra-efficient. My reciever and amps have clipping and overheating circuits that shut them down. I am not sure if your yamaha has that feature. you could have over heated it and damaged it in the process.

I would suggest you plug your speakers into a different amp/reciever and see if they sound alright. Do the same with the reciever, try different speakers on them.

You might have damaged something in the process.

Yes very true PA speakers are built for SPL's and Home hifi ones for good sound reproduction...except some exceptions where a good hifi speaker will do good for parties too.
