Hi

Looking for a possible upgrade suggestion here:

I'm using a Cyrus ONE (Late model) with KEF Coda MkII's. I'm far from being an "audiophile" but the sound definately lacks the "punchy" bass my ear is expecting, regardless of source. As the amp has no tone controls its something of an annoyance.

What would you guys recommend I upgrade, the amp or speakers?

Any input would be great.

I would try the speakers. Coda is not too great with bass.

Cyrus 1 is from the good old days of audio where musicality was very important. it is one of the classic amps hence keep it.

for speakers, whats your budget ?

I was hoping someone was going to say that. I really didnt want to part with the Cyrus.

Budget wise for the speakers, probably around the 150-200GBP mark unforunately.

Are the KEFs not up to the job or just not suited to the Cyrus?

I would suspect the KEF-cyrus combination..but really cannot comment as I have not heard either.

Cyrus is now part of mission. you could also try that combination out..but you need to go by your feelings on extended listening.

speakers of those times were rated low (it should be in the 25 - 40 W range) and did not really go down to 4 Ohms..hence your best bet would be to audition them with some of the old world speakers like Tannoys, Spendors etc.or other +89 db spekers with 8 ohm resistances.(depending on availability and as to where you are based )

Bass response is usually affected by the speaker’s bass capability and also the room acoustics and placement. I have tried out my speakers in three rooms and in all three, they sound like different speakers. Experiment with the placement and extract the maximum from the speakers and after that, if you still feel they are deficient, go for a new pair of speakers. Make sure you have decent quality interconnects and speaker wires. If you are a bass freak and on a tight budget, go for speakers which emphasize bass. Audiophile grade/high-end speakers that produce very punchy natural full range bass are expensive.

Thanks for all the input.

I've tried the speakers in different rooms, even houses (I've just moved) to no avail. I'm not a bass freak, but the sound is extremely lacking.

I've got above average interconnects and speaker cable but nothing too expensive.

Don't get me wrong, the KEFs are nice. The mid is wide open and the top end is "sweet" but I think I'll try some Missions.

Thanks again

Then I guess you need to get better speakers. Try and listen with your electronics before you part with the money. I liked the older missions. Not too sure about the new ones though. It is very difficult to get good quality bass from floorstanders in your budget. Even at 250 GBP I would be looking at the best bookshelf speaker I can find. Floorstanders in this range are plagued by problems like bad cabinets which causes bass-boom, lack of coherence due to cheap crossover design and bad quality multiple drivers. One speaker which sounded ok at this range was the wharfedale diamond 8.3. If you are based in the UK, research into serious local players who could give you high quality DIY kits using high quality drivers and good cabinets and cross-over design. That way your money will go a long way for you.

I'm not much of a DIY'er, but I'm in the UK. I called Richer Sounds (Glasgow) earlier and they suggested I added a Mission sub-woofer LOL

Definately on the look out for new speakers now. Ideally bookshelf with that netural KEF sound.

I wish I had kept my KEF 104ab's now!

Thanks again.

Yea, my old KEFs brought the house down although they lack the crispness the coda's have. Still, wonderful speakers just too big and ugly for the wifey.

Those ART speakers are way out of my budget!

Good bookshelf speakers with defined bass response are quite pricy. One budget bookshelf speaker I liked was the Acoustic Energy Evo 1. If you can push the budget slightly higher, check out the quad 11L. Definitely hear the Evo 1 as this is one speaker which can give you awesome bass for the price. I know one die hard floorstander lover who has settled down with these lovely speakers. Crisp highs and mids with a very defined low end. Very good for the price. You should get it below 200 pounds

Since you are in UK you can try Monitor Audio Silver S2, it is one of the bookshelf that can reproduce pitch perfect lows at that price (UKP300).The highfreq is also very clean but if you want to nit pick you can say it lacks in last bit of air!. Rear port needs some space to breath and the large 7inch woofer can play loud for average rooms.

dosfan, Could you try posting this in the Hifi Choice Forum ?
http://forum.hifichoice.co.uk

You will get more UK based choices..at least more than we can here !
There are speakers like Nola(Alon),celestion, Epos, castle etc in that price range which are supposedly very good
