Hi

I am looking for reasonably priced, decent quality cables to connect my receiver to dvd player, TV etc. I am looking for following cables:

- Digital optical for audio
- Digital coax for audio
- Component video
- Speaker cables

Where to buy in Bangalore (good stuff) and indicative prices?

Thanks
Manish

The closest point for you would be "Audio Planet," Behind Koramangala B.D.A. Complex. Please contact Mr.Palani or Mr.Raman Pillai. They would have what you wanted, and in case they do not readily have, they would either get them or make them for you as per your choice. "Sound Options," next to Koramangala (New) Sukh Sagar has now closed down. Another place you can explore is Sonodyne's showroom in Forum Mall.

hey manish....

i feel the best and VFM cables u can get is from S.P.Road near silver jubilee park(town hall)......Sanson Elctroniks ph-22240912/22898079...they are authorised distributors for MX branded cables....these make cables are from USA.....they are really worth than what u get in the showrooms...just give a look a them before u plan to go in for the brande stuff.....they have all the ranges and all the stuff u are asking for......and i a wide variety.....for the speaker cables ask them for the rs.50 bucks/meter stuff......they are quite thick.....i have taken them from there.....just give a look a them.....

I have bought a few MX electrical audio interconnects. They have been branded as Monster cable (Rs. 300) and Daytona (Rs. 95)? Are they for real??

I use them in my system coz i don't have the faith that expensive cable actually work. Can anybody let me know otherwise?? Also i get my banana plugs and speaker terminals from MX and fnd them very decent.

Dear Pranab,

You built your own speaker boxes why don't you assemble your own cables ?

At a fraction of the cost you can make some pretty decent loudspeaker & interconnect cables.

Regards,

Junia.

P.S. BTW did you build your speaker stands ?

To be on the safe side (I own a very expensive Onkyo receiver TX-NR 900) , I ended up buying QED SR 75 coax cable from pro fx which costed me a bomb at Rs 4100. Long term investement, I am consoling myself

Yes Junia,

I tried my hands at building some interconnects one sunday when i happened to have time to spare. The results were not too encouraging. I used RG6 cable and MX terminals. I think i did the soldering right. I made sure that there was no connection betwen the outer sheath and the inner cable but the hum was very audible when i connected the source and amp. I used up terminals making 3 pairs of interconnects with differing results but the hum was always present. After that i have been caught up in a whirlwind of work and have had absolutely no time to experiment.

I have also decided on a speaker stand. I will be using 1 inch MDF top and bottom and the support will be 3 PVC pipes of different diameters. I think i got this from tnt..not too sure though. Will be build it one sunday when my limbs don't ache too much ;-)Will be using spikes atthe bottom.

Regards,
Pranab

you should also plan out the option of filling the PVC with sand..if it can take the weight and also be stable..

Yes,Arj. I actually forgot to mention that one. The place where i got the design from recommended filling it up with dry sand.
It mentioned that instead of PVC, steel could also be used but then i got to know that at some frequencies, steel gets excited which causes it to resonate.

Sorry for hijacking your thread, Manish. But pls try out MX branded interconnects also while you audition some of the fancier names. I feel till you really start spending the big bucks on amps and speakers, expensive interconnects will not make a justifiable enough difference to the sound quality.

Dear Ronnie 22,

Well what as the outcome with regular interconnects ? Did the hum go away or was it still present ?

Say I am desperately looking for micro steel balls http://www.audiopoints.com/micro.html is there a place in Madras where I could find some ? If so, could you please advise the smallest size available ?

Thanks,

Regards,

Junia.

They look like steel balls used in ballpoint pens! if the size serves your purpose get hold of pen manufacturers.

Dear Anil,

Thanks for the info.

I am going to try out sandblasting/metalblasting grit, perhaps I would have some luck there !

Junia.

For speaker Cables use CAT 5 computer cable. Twist all the conductors together at both ends, that becomes one of the speaker wires, do ditto for the other. It sounds as good if not better than these expensive Oxygen free cables.

Also shielded mains cable (IEC connector) has a huge bearing on the sound, much more than you notice on speaker cable.

Hi Junia,

I must have missed your posting earlier regarding the micro steel balls. Even i don't have any idea about these things. Let me know which types of shops stock them and i'll make some enquiries. And better still if you know the shop that stocks them, then i can pick them up for you.

Pranab
