Quad and Arcam...is what comes to my mind.
I have heard both (though not on the same system).
Both are awsome. Sorry, dont remember the model numbers. But the Arcam is owned by Siva (a forum member), you can get the details from him.
The Quad I saw had a in built Pre-Amp....awesome mids and highs man.

If you can go a bit higher to say 120k then you may try a Wadia (dont remember the model number again but it has a volume control, its entry level from Wadia) argubably the best in the list. But I am not sure if you would get it for that price in India...

Wadia is out of my budget; Besides the 302 is getting phased out. New Wadia models are getting launched @ 2006 CES.

Arcam was in India through Cadence [I think]. But they seem to have stopped doing it !!!! Arcam used to use a 'watered down' version of the ring dac from DCS.

Yes, the quad is an option to consider, but it sounds best with its own amplifier [909]. They have a special link to connect the Power Amplifier.

Any other options ?

A Rega Jupiter is my suggestion. Check if Soundsmiths has any in stock. Very 'Rega' analogue sound and very high specs. Good looking too!

If you are looking at detail

1. Arcam 92 (But incremental value over an Arcam 73 is low...). I think they have moved to Woolfson now
2. Musical fidelity (NOt Xray but the others are good)
3. Naim (Perhaps my favourite in CDPs). i am not sure of its availability in India tho..

Warm Laidback (Over and above the Rega and Audioaero)

1. Opera consonance 2.2 Very very good.. has volume control to boot
2. Cayin
3. Micromega. it is available in Singapore.

But my highest recomendation will be to get a Benchmark DAC1 from singapore.. the best VFM IMHO. just use it with your usual DVD player

How could I miss that. Excellent recomendation Sir !.

Copeland and Electrocompaniet are perhhps one of the most delicate but detailed CDPs i have ever heard. Funny that both are scandinavian !

NOt sure about its availability outside europe tho.. but if you can get anything from Europe then please add Lector AND Audiomat to your list.. Audiomat are less known outside france and Canada but their Tube equipment is very well regarded .. on the lines of Jadis but not that expensive.

From the US Cary audio should have a playe in the USD 200O budget. another name would be Sim Audio ( thinnk their Equinox is the lower end model within the above budget)

But I really have no idea about the Warranty etc etc..

Sub Note: I completely forgot about Primare.. another good CDP model within budget but again not sure of its indian dealer. b

jolidas were pretty good some years back.. but do sometimes have a problem with their transport.

If you get warranty on it including the lens..then it is a very good Value for Money buy. (In internationam market it is in the USD 400-700 range depending where you buy it) not sure in INdia

Poor Build Quality & very Poor Sound Quality [Currently]

The Chinese Opera Consonance may be a better option.

Rega has introduced a new cdp called the apollo. I think it should be cheaper than the Jupiter which is around 100k. But they claim some new interesting technology.

hello jeeves,

There was a lot of discussion on the Apollo in some other forums. it apparently is a very good thing to have happened to Rega. lets wait and see

I recently was speaking to someone on the Opera 2.2. It is supposedly pretty amazing for its cost. A very solid build as well as clean sounding and resolving..

Hi,

I've been following the movement in CD replay to go to no upsampling, no antialiasing filter designs. As exemplified by AudioNote, Zanden, and now Consonance (Opera Audio).

Seems to produce an extremely natural, fatigue free sound.

Now, Opera has brought out composite CD players employing this philosophy, which are half-affordable. Hopefully, SoundSmiths in Mumbai will bring them in so we can listen to them and hear for ourselves.

They are already in, in fact they have been on demo for the past 1 month. They also have a piece in ND at their DC Showroom. You could drop by and audition the same.

For all the forum members in Bombay, the player is on demo @ Ritz Hotel. It is nice to comapre it to the Primare.

Do try the Copland Cd-823, or a LINN GENKI. (just sold one in Blore). You can also try the Primare CD player.

[2006 review of the cd player]

The Linn Genki has a list of US $'s 1,950/- hence it would surely be less than 100 K.
This player would qualify.

1 model of Primare might be in the budget - CD21

http://primare.net/00002/00007/00009/default.asp

This is a cheaper player.

Every component of the CD21, from the CD transport to the audio output stage, has been designed to achieve the highest possible audio performance.

The CD21 uses an excellent low-noise mechanism and a high quality DAC for each channel, which, in synergy with Primare’s discrete circuit topology, restores smooth, undistorted, naturally three-dimensional music to the listener.

A very large power supply using a R-core transformer with separate windings for all of the player’s different power requirements and ultra fast discrete power regulators for the critical analogue audio stage, makes sure that enough regulated power is available for even the deepest sonic transient that can be recorded on a compact disc.

Various analogue and digital outputs are provided for a maximum of flexibility in system configuration as well as RS-232 and IR ports are provided for system automation options.

IMHO the Denon 2900 or the Marantz Universal player ( forget the model no) are hard to beat. I believe they are STREETS ahead of the Rega players and many others.

The Marantz is priced around Rs 40 K

The Deno 2900 is actually discontinued, but new units are, Im told avaliable in the grey market at below Rs 27 K.

GREAT Buy at that price.

But then both these are BELOW your price range ..

Perreaux CD-1P is one player that I can strongly recomend due to following reasons.

1. It reproduces the cymbals right, the impact of stick or the feathering of brush is clean and most importantly the ringing and decaying is more natural. (more in line with the sound of LP's)

2. This one doesn't spit out sibilant transients like some/most players that I have heard in this price bracket.

3. HDCD decoder makes noticeable difference when a HDCD is played, you hear natural sounding cellos and bass guitars.

4. Very authoritative low freq reproduction, plays Mahler's symphony wihtout loosing composure at the same time nuances of fingered aucustic bass is also maintained.

5. Both male and female vocals are played wihtout any chestiness or screeching
