Hello Friends,

I am a new Hi-Fi forum member.
I would be grateful if you could give me your feedback on the quality & reliability of Torvin speakers.
URL: http://www.torvin.com

I went & checked out a demo of one of their models at Audio Planet,Koramangala & found them to be as good as other international brands.

If you have auditioned Torvin speakers, Please give me your feedback on their price & performance.

Also, are there any other Indian brands (like Torvin) who make good & affordable 5.1 amplifiers(other than Sonodyne). Please let me know.

Thanks,
Rahul Rathan

Rahul,
i suggest u look at Mr.Arasu Kumar's line of speakers and amps..He manufactureers his own drive units and desings the enclosureers for them.
i was totally blown away by his speakers.. spent a good 3 hours with him and was like an epiphany. It was heartening to know that Indians too are capable of producing such excellent indegenous drive units and speakers.

apparently Torvin uses his drive units after they found Peerless to be below par.
i suggest u try his bookshelves and his 2 way system(which retails for 21k) . the 2 way system blew away my Wharfedale diamond 8.4s into nonexistence and sounded much superior to the Acoustic Potraits that i heard.
Only the tweeters are Vifa drivers.
Cheers,
Sachi

i have not heard Sanen speakers...
But had heard the old Torvins with the peerless drivers and they sounded bad..
Mr. Arasu had a nother 3 way system..with i think four 8' bass units a Vifa tweeter for the highs and an 8inch mid.((each speaker enclosure weighed in at 70 odd kgs...)
The sound was phenomenal. played the Burmeister Cd and wow!...the Bass was unbelieveable...i had to ask him time and agina if he had turned the 2 subwoofers off or not!...
I seriously sugest that those who are looking for quality Indian speakers that can rival other speakers should take a look at his speakers...
He is a very nice chap and very hospitable...am planning to go there again next week to forward my speaker design to him,as he has agreed to get the front panel cut out done for me at his factory at cost price including the grill for the speaker.!

Benks,
Regarding Mr.Arasu's speakers, that was great news but I still wonder how come he was so unheard in this forum where there are so many from bangalore ....

Its really strange that such people can remain hidden for so long...

Yeah, absoultely true Abhi.

I have been seeing him on diyaudio.com since the time i joined that forum but had not met him..
incidentally , the diyaido.com chaps had a meeting of all Bangaloreans at his showrrom and i was supposed to go , but, unfortunately i had an exam the next day...

There is going to be another meeting of the Bangalore diy chaps soon...
BUt since the topic of the thread is on Torvin and Indian speakers..i can vouch that Mr Arasu's speakers are among the best i have heard, clearly surpassing the wharfedale diamond 8 series,Torvin and Sonodyne and even the acoustic potraits, IMHO, of course.

Those particular speakers according to him are still under testing and he would be finalising the design and prices shortly.

I just went through the Torvin site. They have one of the widest ranges I have seen. Speakers and amps and home theatres. Do they plan to also make AV receivers like Sonodyne? That's one area where Indian manufacturers have never ventured.

Sachi,
please put out more info on Mr. Arasu's products or ask him to join the forum. What's the sonic characteristic of his product - are they neutral or biased to a particular taste? Are his speakers a cut above the Mission ones. I currently regard Mission as the best among affordable speakers (< 25,000).

Any idea how much this guy would charge for a pair of 10 inch drivers.

Hey Neutral,
no i would'nt say his speakers are neutral( no pun intended )..
They have a huge soundstage and the bass is more than present(not at all loose )..and i was sitting 20 feet away from them ..
The only thing is that they are not magnetically shielded..
I did not ask him abt the 10 inch drivers...but his 12 inch ones(the ones in his subs) cost around 1900 a piece..
and the 8 inchers are around 550-600 a piece..

The two ways that i heard are far above anything i have listened to in the 30-40 k bracket and definitely better than my wharfedale diamond 8.4s which i thought were better than the 25k Mission 74i. it possibly could beat quite a few which are 50k+ too..but to arrive at this conclusion i would have to listen to it for some more time...
I will ask him to join the forum...if he is willing then we'll see him here soon...
Cheers,
Sachi

Thanks Sachi. Those subs must be real powerful with 12" drivers. Is he partnering the sub with a floorstander. A 12" won't play higher frequencies. They are pretty expensive. I guess a single driver would be sufficient. I hope Arasu joins the forum. We can learn from him if he has such skill.

Can one place the binding post on the front of a subwoofer. I know nobody does that but is it acoustically harmful?

I just spoke to Mr. Arasu Kumar.

Abt his products , he has invited me to audition them. I was basically interested for bookshelf speakers.

5.25 inches , 2 way speakers cost 10.5k , per pair,

dual 5.25 inches bookself cost 18 k per pair.

He said his website would be coming up soon as well.

Dear Benks I don't subscribe to the point that if a brand is big it has make good products..there are many guys like Arasu,Sivat who can make good stuff at fraction cost. So will definetely check these stuff first and Acoustic Portrait's later.......

Best Indian made drivers, Peerless; not the ones that are locally available though.Go to www.peerlessaudio.com and check out the stuff there. That 15" subwoofer is a amazing driver.I have a piece with me that is in a 100kg enclosure tuned to 22Hz.I have a 700watt R.M.S amp driving it, and you can hear and feel the LF, you can see the monster, but you can't locate it aurally.I'll post some pics if I can.
