Hi Audiophiles,

I am confused on what to buy. I have two options -

1. Buy a HK AVR and JBL speakers
2. Buy a JBL speaker Package with powered subwoofer (Which connects other speakers and provides inputs and outputs). This is half the price as option 1. Also the speakers are half the wattage.

As I am new to home theatre and cost is also a major factor in my decision.

If these are the only two options then go for the first one. A separate AVR & Speaker system.

Thanks Sanjay,

Is the first option worth spending twice the amount as the second for a novice like me. Would I be able to appreciate the difference?

Hi,
I am new to this forum and also somewhat novice in this matter but I can give you my opinion:
1. Though you are new to HT(Home Theater) arena but if you have been listening good Stereo sound for a considerable amount of time and feel that you can appreciate good the quality of sound in a stereo system then I think you can very well do it in an HT system also.

2. The wattage you mentioned about, matters majorly if you like listen music at above 75% of the volume most of the time. Else if you normally listen at less than 50% of the volume and only occasionally look for higher volumes then you can compromise on wattage.

3.Further if you have intentions of long term investment i.e you are not intending to upgrade your system as and when you overgrow your current system and to be with it for a longer period then I strongly suggest that you go for seperate AVR and Speakers combination. Your money will be worth it as long as you own it and you wont need a upgradation in near future.

Seperates are always better and upgradation is easier...the diffrence in sound is enormous...yaa it costs more ..but good sound always comes at premium.Packages ease you the worry of matching components.....but nowadays there are so many options shopping is a breeze...
