Hi Guys,

Would appreciate your feedback on this poll.

You need not actually own an iPod / MP-3 personal player.

Even if you have carefully heard a Friend's iPod / MP-3 personal player, I would appreciate your feedback.

I also suspect that some have an aversion for these devices, hence the 1st option.

I listen to MP3s on my laptop at office through a Creative 2.1 speaker setup. While it is great fun and sounds good, it just doesn't compare with my system at home.

Having said that It's not fare to compare the two I suppose.

Cheers

used to listen to mp3s ripped at 320 long back. they sounded decent through the standard comp speakers. 192 if i remember the rate right was also tolerable. 128 was lousy.

Happily surprised to see that ALL 10 respondents felt that their system sounded better than an iPod.

I have been wondering / speculating that the iPod system at its best ( ie with Lossless compression and with the ipod Headphones ) is the dividing line for entry into High Fidelity.

As a consequence, if your system sounds worse than an ipod, you aint achieved Hi Fi ... yet.

What say ? This could then prove to be a readily accesible yardstick to determine Entry level Hi Fi

Would like to hear other's views / debate this...

Question: Which car is better - Maruti 800 or Mercedes S 500 ?

Answer:

Question: Which is more useful - a needle or a sword?

Answer:

I wish my MP3 player sounded as good as my HiFi !
I wish I could carry my HiFi equipment & about 20 CDs hanging with a strap around my neck !!

Ipod is a pretty bad bench IMHO. The iriver players sound way way better than the IPODs. Unfortunately they cost more too. I'd say an iriver player plus a decent budget headphone such as a Grado SR60 or Sennheiser HD485 would probably be a lot better a benchmark.

I WAS an iRiver fan... and I suspect that atleast part of that was the desire to break away from the herd.

IMHO the iRivere sound is warmerer, and could certainly appeal to some.

The user interface of the ipod is WAY ahead,

Yes, the iRiver often offers more features like a built in FM radio and voice recording...

Unfortunately.... atl;east in my friends circle, Rivers have suffeed premature deaths....

This might have been true around 4 years back when their first HD based players came out (They even had a digital out !) but over the years the binternal DAC/Amplifier in the iPod is actually better than most..

Thats surprising cos with decent headphones, Gen 2 and 3 ipods sound better to me than the current gen Ipod video. With the stock earphones, all mp3 players pretty much sound complete rubbish. I'm not sure what sort of DAC these new ones are using cos info is scant but its definitely not top of the line. The Nano/mini are even worse than the 30gig video ipod. Do pass on any info if you are aware of :).

actually the ipods have also deteriorated in quality since the IIIrd gen (I have one of those) after that quality of components took second place to size

even modders like red wine audio prefer doing so to the IIrd gen.

but the others have fallen on the SQ front even steeper
