I finally got to read the last issue of What Hi-Fi thanks to my generous Chennai friend However, am disappointed by the content

Don't get me wrong. The presentation is world-class in every respect. BUT... all the products seems to get 4 or 5 stars. Rarely 3 stars. Where are the 1 and 2 stars? (We all know the junk that often claims to be hi-fi.) Also a reviewer will mention that a HT costing close to Rs 2 lakhs is worthless for stereo, but still give it 5 stars.

I am beginning to wonder if avmax, which has shoddier production values, is not a better buy. I just don't know whether I can trust What Hi-Fi. It seems too kind to audio companies. But what about us customers?

The HiFi magazines are not really HiFidelity .... they are all colored

However, in What HiFi you can read between the lines. When they day that one product is rosier than the other ... you won't be wrong in interpreting that the other one is actually down right thorny

I suggest that you must read a few issues of What HiFi and you will learn to pick the subtle hints. Anyway - that's the best that we have at the moment.

the mag should actually be called WHAT? HIFI?? was doing some reading after being stuck at home and i noticed that in last years issue (sept sometime i think) they say the aegis evo 3 sound disparate where the drivers dont work together as a whole. in the current issue they say the best thing about the speaker is the cohesiveness! from 4 stars it moves up to a 5 star where they rhapsody about it with no fault in sight. wonder how the hell they change their rating so much?

Maybe Aegis promised a couple of ad insertions for a couple of stars! What HiFi is an entertaining read. Not a very helpful one.

Yup, the magazine presentation is SUPERB !

However, scant details on the performance and the basis of their judgement are provided.... Just Verdicts.

I would rate the magazine a shade better than T-9 or Stuff, in its coverage of Hi Fi. ... But then the babes in the other 2 mags ! ! !

All magazines are there in the market to do business not charity so you gotta take what they say with a pinch of salt...sometimes with a handful of it coz in the end...money talks.

These magazines can't really piss a manufacturer off by outrightly criticizing the product so like our doctor sa'ab said, you have to read between the lines to get a somewhat clearer picture. Evo 3's case in What Hi-Fi? is pretty funny, when I was considering buying them, I went through a couple of years' issues and their ratings kept going up and down like elevators!

Stereophile on the other hand gets too technical with its review for a layman to understand, in fact all them numbers and graphs can put someone off entirely...

The trick is to get a general idea of a product's performance from these mags and then go out touch, hear & feel it for yourself and then form an opinion...

Actually the Stereophile Reviews are in 2 Separate parts.

The Tech measurements are put in a separate box, and done by a person who is Not subjectively reviewing the products.

Hence you can read the entire subjective review without even glancing at the tech measurements....

Personally, I prefer a technical review as well because that would enable me to validate what is said in the subjective review. I am sure knowledgeable people like Amp Nut would be able to make even better use of this data.

Yes, I guess the only objective mag would be an ad-free one. But, even though we pay a 100 bucks, they still bend double to please the manufacturers.

I guess it would be good fun to read between the lines. Somehow, I liked Nishant of avmax better. He seemed more straightforward.
