4. Is it good to Buy Yamaha Center and Surround speakers as a startup option and later upgrade them ?

Hi Anand,

I believe Yamaha V650 is a very good A/V amplifier to start with.

However, to answer your 3rd Q I don't think Yamaha Speaker would be a good choice even to start for.

I'll suggest you check for JBL/Jamo which are widely availale in Bangalore.

Also, you can check out with Prithvi who can sugegst you something within your budget.

Regards,
Sourav

JBL and jamo will never be available for that budget.
ur better off looking at sonodyne or wharfedale(they too would demand that u stretch ur budget).
Believe me, i have only just realised the speakers are the most important in the setup.
u see, the NAd is so much more capable that i'm sure i'll upgrade my speakers by the end of this year. don't get me wrong. the diamonds are exceptional value for money and is still the best u can get for 20-30k(IMHO of course). but i'm aiming to upgrade to something better. much better.

Ben

Hi Anand,
First of all, you didnt mention your budget for the Surrounds and Centers, that way we can calculate with some flexibility as where to put some extra money and make some compromise on the other components.
BTW where do you stay ?

For the Sub one of the better option you can get is Sonodyne 1805 at 12k. Its damn good for the price IMHO.
You can also try Torvin, Space Audio if you are in and around Chennai and if you are in and around Mumbai, you can look for Lithos, Sanen, Pandam etc. All of them are into lower budget Value for money stuffs.

For the Speakers in 15k range you got to decide between FloorStanders and BookShelves (Much easier to get a decent Bookshelf speaker). BTW someone in this forum itself was willing to sell his Diamond 8.4 FloorStanders for 18k !!!

You got to give some more details about your Budget, Location, Musical taste etc for a more precise suggestion...

anand, you seem to be the perfect candidate for JBL :-)

Just kidding......

Sonodyne, Acoustic Portrait Tacet series may suit your budget and music.

Wharfedale diamonds are always a favourite at that price. Maybe you could get a mission or boston acoustics CR series ?

manek.

to tell u frankly i'm not that impressed with the diamonds when listenign to hard rock or metaql thur the Nad. the kick fro m the bass is just missing. now fo rthe past 2 hours had been listennig to metal and hard rock thru the yamaha in 2 ch mode with the sub and its a whole new ball game.
wish i had the cash to buy some extar length of wires and y-splitters so that i could u se the sub with the nad.
imagine the detailing of the Nad and the slam from the sub. ohhh heaven.
cheers,
Ben

Hi Anand,

If you like Rock more, than you go for Klipsch Reference like RF3 etc. Many peoples opinion is Klipsch suits well for Rock music. You can try, you may get some well maintained used ones.

For 20k I think Sonodyne Sonus 2605 would be a good option that too keeping in mind the kind of music you listen to. Acoustics Portrait Tacet series is decent but I liked the Sonodyne more so you got to check them yourselves.
Overall I can very convincingly recommend you for a all Sonodyne setup..that includes:

Sonodyne Sonus 2605 Towers (front) : 22k
Sonodyne bookshelves for rears : 8k
Sonodyne Centers : Not sure
Sonodyne Sub 1805 : 12k

Terrific combo for your musical tastes.
Can also try similar combo from Acoustics Portrait, Wharfdale or even Torvins Phantom 9 series.

Anand,
I know that ProFX in bagalore has some good budget speakers. KEF cresta floorstanders retail at 22k and surrounds and center are around 10k. KEF sub starts at 17k after discount, but there are Polk Audio subs coming along shortly at about 10k - worthwhile checking these out. HOwever all the above are 125W or less I think.

Hi ravi,

You r right Polk subs are priced at 9700 but with a 50 watt amp or 12" driver with 100 watt amp at 14k and their floor standers are worth a look.

Folks thanks a lot for your valuable suggestions.

Maybe I need to raise the bar a bit
How about 50-55k INR for Floorstanders, Center, Surrounds and Sub in a 5.1Ch setup with atleast 135W each ?
Any suggestions on this one ?

if u decide to go fro the diamond 8 packagae u can get it for around40k(after a bit of bargaining) but without a sub. but don't worry the diamond 8.4 can and will do a good job without a sub till u have the finances to go buy a proper sub. donot compromise on the sub. it makes or breaks a HT. so my sincere advice to u would be to look at sonodyne and wharfedale and later when u are reaady go buy a kick ass sub that'll bring ur house down or somthing like that (they are the best at the at this price sange as they strike a compromise between stereo and HT and cater to both of those needs for the beginner audiophile, gauranteed to keep u smiling, until u become hooked to this crazy hobby and increase ur budget atleast two fold.) just my two cents. regarding the receiver, u can ask the whafedale person to let u audition them with yamaha as he already has the marantz doing HT duty).listen to both sonodyne and wharfedale companies and decide for urself.
regarding the KEF, the cresta series are good. but u are better off looking for a different sub than the KEF(1100.2). it is just no good at all.
just my two cents,
Cheers,
Ben

the acoustic energy and athena technologiees should also be available in the same range though i have not heard either of them. but i see many reviews around and many people on different forums regard them with respect and admiration. they are worth a look. so is the definitive technology procinema series. u can get the procinema 100 for around 42k and it includes the sub that i have.
a lot of food for thought. hope u can take small bites(audition one at a time) and arrive at a decision.

Anand,
I would continue from where Benks has left, Sub is one of the most important component of an HT and believe me you are loosing a lot by not having a Sub (of course a good one). How ever good your front speaker might be but you wont get the low freq effect that you desire because very few AVRs I have seen give a good low freq signal to the fronts, most of them sound Dull and Muddy (without a sub). Due to this weakness of the AVR you have to have a sub to get the thump and effect of a good HT. Many people think that if one has a good Tower speakers for the front he may not require a sub but that is awesomely wrong as I said that AVR dont give a good low freq response to the fronts in 5.1 mode. Now coming to your point, I still think the Sonodynes would do a better job for you than the Wharfdales though Wharfdales are also damn good for the price. Sonodynes have that extra bit of aggression which is required for Hard Rock. Wharfdale just lacks that little bit of forwardness to suit your taste IMHO.
Thats my two cents entirely. You have to carry your CDs and check them out very tightly to select the better of them. And for the sub, you have to take them seriously and cant postpone them for long. Checkout Subs from Polk, Wharfdale, Sonodyne, Lithos within 15k range, all of them should be decent.
