Hi,

I think the missing "http" in Viren's post was causing problems. Could you please check if this link works?

Nice.Thanx Viren.

The point that the article makes Bhagwan, is that somewhere down the line we seem to have forgotten that it's about the music and Hifi is not the end but a means to the end.

Thanks Krish !
It was too long to go through.

I would love to agree with you and the article, however, for me it is the other way round.

is that somewhere down the line we seem to have forgotten that it's about the music and Hifi is not the end but a means to the end.

For me, music is the 'means' to the end.
Audio as a hobby for me comes first & music the means [the catalyst] that helps me get close to that 'elusive' nirvana in audio.

Having checked out Virens rig extensively, I would tend to agree.
A simple stereo system, but very musical sounding.
Complexity is not always progress.

I would like to state, for me it is not about simplicity or complexity, it is about the technology being true to its original intent, with the ability to deliver musical believablity. If Viren's intended path is simplicity, and it achieves the desired result, for him first, followed by a group of others who see it his way, then he has excelled in his original intent, technologically and musically. He rightly deserves the cult following he has.

There is a theory that when someone listens to a song/ music he loves, he actually sings it in his mind, and enjoyment comes from there, does not matter what speakers are used...

OK, theories apart, let me list the real advences in technology that happened over audio over past few decades.

- First and foremost, the recording quality has improved beyond measure. I just do not understand why the old recordings (in India) were so much bad with a lot of hsss..grrr sounds, it is really difficult to listen to old recordings unless you listen to your own singing in mind :).

- The great CD that has made a great digital divide. Nowadays people at least do not argue anymore on the quality of CD music.

- The advances in SS electronics have made the noise level in amplifiers really inaudible, today one can buy a cost effective audio system where there is only music, no noise..

- The reliability aspect of amplifiers has also improved by orders of magnitude.

- Coming to the issue on going back, we should not just be going back for nostalgic emotions. There are big companies today that employ so-called old paper driver, very simple cross-over, etc. because they could design well with them, crying over "old is forgotten" does not reflect reality.

- Finally, there is no escaping the fact that objective measurement, like THD, inter-modulation distortion, frequency measurement, etc. are absolutely essential to gauge the quality of an audio system. This is the minimum benchmark. If there is a place of subjectivity, it is beyond that.

so true.. it is like Food, water and air are essential to live.

but to make like worth living and make one feel alive one needs arts/entertaintment ,family etc :)) and these are person dependant

so yes the basic paramaters are important as if they do not do those things well, then you are looking at a Bad design which should not be even considered hifi.

but it is the tonality, transparency...etc etc which make it exciting and these are people dependant
