Gentlemen & Ladies (if any)
I am a newbie to this forum but have been an avid audiophile for the past 10 years or so. I currently reside in Detroit and in a couple of years plan to move back to my Home country - India, potentially Bangalore or Hyderabad.
A question for the members - Availability of Hi end hi-fi in India in general and specifically in the two cities of Hyd or Bangalore. My current 2 channel system has a retail of Approx $10k in the US and gives me the sound I desire - High resolution, deep & wide soundstage and pinpoint imaging. I hope to be able to reproduce that in India. What in your opinion could I get system wise for apprx. $10k?
Thx. for your effort in advance.

If you could tell us what your current equipment is, we could gauge what your taste / expectation is and tell you what is available out here……….

yeah if u love ur system either get the system to India or buy the same in India. If you could fine something better for that price in India then you can go for that...

This is my current system:

B&W N805 spkrs.
Sufire Classic Vacuum Tube Preamp
Quicksilver Mid Mono Monoblock Tube amps.
Marantz SA8260 CD/SACD Player
Musical Fidelity A324 Upsampling Dac
PS audio speaker cables (bi-wire)
Shunyata research power cords
Signal cable silver interconnects
PS audio power accessories.

I would love to be able to ship this back to India as a mini Transfer of Residence when I move, but I will be without any warranty or service help at all. Secondly, I plan to get full range B&W Nautilus speakers when I get back to India (I know from these forums that B&W is available in India) for the room size in my home in India is atleast 30' x 25 'x 12'.
Finally I worry about the voltage at 110 here in the states and 220 in India. I know I can use step down's but in the past I brought an Yamaha Rcvr. in the US and used a step down in India, and after 2 years 1 channel is gone, though I have been using a voltage stabilizer along with the step down transformer.
Thx.
Sid

bring the cables...

you could buy the other stuff here but be warned...warranty in india for high end equipment is sometimes very suspect unless you buy from a known entity.....well thats my experience....

definitely get the cables/ICs..

Speakers, perhaps you could find out the cost from the BW dealer in India and tell him that you are considering buying and shipping from the US as well and ask him for his price.. and go with whatevers a better option

Amp/Preamp/CDs .. better to buy local or from Singapore/HK if you can

I had done a TR from Singapore once and really did not face too much of a hassle since i had all the bills..

Hi !

High end Hi Fi is fine but think twice about coming back to India. And in case you do venture, don't dispose off your system & your house in US. High chance that you may go back in 6 months.

There's a lot of low-fi noise here in India for which there are no alterntives. Politics, corruption, bad roads, bad infrastructure, etc. - to name a few.

I have seen a few of my determined patriotic friends trying a home-coming ..... couldn't sustain.

BTW the following link will give you an idea about the pricing of B & W

..And those are 2004 prices and that too exclusive of MST :).. which the site mentions as 13.5% Gulp !

Also, would request all of the posters followin this thread that we keep this to specific to hifi and the Merits/ Demerits on the Low Fi mentioned above are not discussed as that will hijak the thread in another mindless discussion !

Gentlemen,
A lot of good information and advice from all of you. Much appreciated. Interesting post from Sanjay. These are prices of B&W from my local dealer (B&W is very strict about on-line sales so they are available local only - Not available anywhere in the US on-line):
1. 602s3: $650 or Rs 29,250 (using apprx. 45 to $1)
2. 603s3: $1000 or Rs 45,000
3. 705: $1500 or Rs 67,500
4. N805(my speakers) $2000 or Rs 90,000

I can see where the dealers in India are significantly higher in the high end. OK so import my speakers. What abour preamps & amps. I have heard Cadence receive praise in the Hi-Fi rags. Do they have some good tube preamps & amps? My thinking is that since they are local their service and pricing should be good. I will also consider importing the source from Sing. as suggested.
Cables are definitely no brainers? What about power conditioners and power cables?
Thx.

Ping screamgigi or sbfx or even Viren, Prithvi or Siva on tube stuff in India. Viren actually makes pretty good tube amps and Siva makes an awesome tube preamplifier. They would know the real stuff on tubes out here. I would suggest you import the speakers and rest of the ancillaries including your power cords, cables and even a source.
From what I have heard from someone who uses full range Nautilus (matrix) speakers in vellore (tamilnadu), they needs awesome amount of power to really extract their full potential. He uses a Jeff Rowland power amp and still found it wanting……….

Why don't you try the tube preamp by AKSA ..

They have some nifty products and since they are australian you don't have to worry about voltage compatibility problems.

Second square wave. You must consider Lyrita Audio if tubes are your thing.

Viren is a member of this forum.

You can check out most of his gear at www.lyrita-audio.com.

I do not know. All I know is that he has been working on it for quite a while now and it is almost over except for the chassis design which I heard is being done now. The last time I heard it at absolute phase, it beat the pants out of the MF AC-3 and the Audio research sp6 pre amp. Why don’t you ask Siva directly about this ?
