I have a pair of old Infinity Renassaince 90 speakers that I'm very fond of, the only trouble is that they are a very difficult load (0,9ohm minimum) and my current amp, a Classe Ca-301 doesn't quite seem to do the job.

I've been looking for a new amplifier for a while and have stopped at two alternatives, the first is a Pass Labs X-350 amplifier and the second ML:s awesome 33H monoblocks. Yes, I know they are quite different in price but how big is the different in reality? What other options are there?

Do remember that you are bound to face this problem as long as you have those speakers....your costs on amps/upgrades will skyrocket.

If I were you I would change the speakers( I know its difficult) and make sure that you have a wider option of amps to drive them with in the future. Secondly this way you could get away with amps which are cheaper and yet probably sound as good.

Yes, I know, but both me and my girlfriend are very fond of them, and I have tried quite a lot others (Martin Logan Prodigy, B&W Nautilus etc) but every other speaker seem to lack something that the Ren 90 are better at.

yeah I know what you mean ! Breaks the heart to sell speakers that suits one ears.
I'm really surprised that a speaker manufacturer like infinity would let impedance drop to 0.9 ohms. How old would you say these speakers are ? Nowadays most speaker manufacturers make take care as to not let the speakers go below 2ohms. 0.9 ohms is a killer !

What about the Jeff rowlands 201 and 501 monoblock amps ? I heard the 201's with the B&W's in a high end HT setup and they sounded very good indeed. Dont know about their 0.9 ohm capability. Would they be in your price range ?

They are from the mid 90:s. The problem is the dual coil Watkins woofer with one 2 ohm side and one 4ohm side.

Price range is up to 10000$ I guess but cheaper is of course always better! I have considered buying a pair of 33h and they would definitly do the job, but what ohter options are there? I have looked at a Pass Labs X350 and they would probably do a better job but still not quite it.

I guess tube amps are out of the question.

tubes are a no no ! you could also try the plinius range too. I hear they are pretty beefy and can handle all kinds of tough loads.

ofcourse the jeff rowland monos which I mentioned earlier.

Sounds interesting! I have looked at plinius and they are definitly worth looking at. No experince from Jeff Rowland, but I guess they are very, very good as well.

I have also been thinking of a FPB 600C amp, that most likely would do the job and more over! They only problem is that I have to change fuses to get it working properly!

Hi there,
May I suggest a much less expensive alternative? Try the Aragon range. If you can get an older range (pre Klipsh) like Aragon 8008BB/Aragon 8008ST, they are I believe better than the new ones. But you might like to check out the new ones too, the specs are the same, really have power to drive most loads.

MMX_2, from what I know of Infinity (At least the new ranges) they are not very difficult to drive. this .9 Ohms that you speak of might occur only at very high freq..were you able to check out its specs sheet ?
But Driving 1 ohm loads is not an easy task !

If you can get hold of YBA, MBL, Jeff Rowlands, Krell, Pass labs etc do try them as well.they are all able to run Martin Logans Vvry well and elecrrostats do have sub 1 ohm impedance

Even the Electrocompaniet monoblocks which originate from the Nordic regions should be good. In fact I do know of one audiophile who used to Run Infinity Kappa 8 with Electrocompaniet monoblocs AW 180...he upgraded to Thiels driven by a classe but then went back to his old setup after 2 months

Thanks for all tip! Great response.

I have tried quite a lot including some electrocompaniet and the are good, but this speaker is a bit tricky as said. Have also heard them with a Krell FPB 200C but I was not very impressed. It looks like its gonna be a Pass Labs X-350, a friend of mine has got this one and he is very satisfied.
