How can I get a single video out from multiple sources in my Marantz SR301

Since this AVR is the first one that I am using, I don't know whether this is how AVRs are supposed to work (or maybe this is what upscaling is supposed to do).

My TV has a DVD component input as well as several analog composite inputs.

I have multiple video sources - a Philips DVP3046 DVD player, and a Tata Sky STB.

The Philips DVDP has a component out that I have connected to the AVR. But the STB only has composite out which is connected as a second video source in the AVR.

The AVR has a component video out to the TV.

Now my (perhaps misplaced) idea of AVR was that just as it takes care of routing audio from any sources to one output - the speakers, it would also take video from any sources to one output - the TV.

However, I discovered that selecting the Tata Sky source doesn't send video via component to the TV. Only if I add an additional composite connection to the TV from the AVR, do I get the STB signal. So component in -> component out. Composite in -> composite out.

Is this how it is supposed to work? It is irritating to change the video source of the TV as well as of the AVR to see two different sources.

Do higher end models address this problem? Am I doing something wrong in the setup?

You're thinking of component video conversion (up-conversion) -- composite and S-video converted to component outputs -- not up-sampling (lower resolution scaled to higher). And no, you're not doing anything wrong. All AVRs I've encountered in this budget lack this feature - you'd need to cross the 30k mark to find it.

Yes, it is a bit of a pain to switch video sources. One possible solution is to get something like Logitech's Harmony Universal Remote that allows you to program "activities", i.e. macros to perform a series of functions for you. (e.g. "Watch DVD" => Switch on TV, switch on AVR, switch on DVD, switch to Component Input, select DVD on AVR, press Play on DVD...). Watch out though, the model sold locally by Logitech (Harmony 525) seems to have bad reviews - the higher ones appear to be better. Or...you could get used to hitting that AV/Component switch
