I have a pair of Avant 904i floorstanders. I am looking for a subwoofer to complement it. The Avant series itself has 309i which is well regarded.

However, after I asked for 309i, I was told that the shop got 409w(from MS' Genie series) instead from the suppliers.

Anyone who has any experience with Mordaunt Short, how would you compare these two? Would there be a problem of integration with my existing speakers if I take the sub from a different series?

if you are looking for HT take the Bigger Sub with bigger drivers.

Size does matter with subs for HT

Both of them are 10". However, 309i is front firing. While 409w is downfiring. 409w is 200w though, while 309i is 175w.

From your inputs, I think it is going to be better to go in for the 409 one.

down or front firing does not matter unless you have carpeted or wooden floor in which case front firing is preferred.
go for the one with the bigger amp.

BTW whats the lowest frequency they go to ? for HT purposes if you do get a good deal with a Sonodyne sub then go for that ( I remember someone mentioning that in the forum)

Got the 409w yesterday. It goes down to 38hz. spent the most of last night trying to set it up.

The notch filter was a great feature(in both the subs). For me the 57-71hz band was the troublesome one.

I am still figuring out the speaker placement. It is just behind the right speakers at the corner now.

The marantz SR301 I have, only had a single channel sub pre-out. I used an RCA from there to the sub and then used a Y cable to feed into the left and right channels of the sub input. Even though the manual talks about just feeding the left-in if I have one channel, I read somewhere that by feeding both left and right signals, the sub adds the signals thus getting a better signal. Does this make sense? It seems i got a better output by doing that, but that might be perception.

Setting up the sub is pretty tricky. There is a crossover in it as well as the receiver. There is a volume knob there as well as the channel levels in the AVR.

I have currently set the crossover to its max in the sub, and set the crossover in the AVR instead to 80hz. I have set the 904i to L speakers, and set up the LFE of sub+fronts to SW+(both). Is this fine for such front speakers?
