Hi people,
I have a Marantz SR4600 and Wharfedale diamond 8.4 series floor standers for the fronts.
I am planning an upgrade shortly. What do you guys think I should upgrade?
- Go for a sub woofer
- Go for a center and surrounds
- Anything else?

My listening would be 80% music and an occasional movie on weekends.

What do you guys suggest.

Thanks

Thanks Abhi and Krish..

@Krish - good question.. well I have a 7.1 AVR and what am I doing with just 2 front speakers!! Am not missing bass but could do with some occassionally.. hmmm.. thinking again.. maybe I just need that surround sound and hear gun shots and stuff loud and clear.. when I watch movies..

In that case I guess it would be the surrounds?

Any particular make I should go for considering I have wharfedale fronts??

personally i would suggest a sub as a 2. is preferable to a 5.0 setup to me ! would rather hear an impactful Thud of the bullet than the ambient sound..

this is especially true if you do listen to TV via your HT as in that case a sub will definitely improve the sound as tv encoding is either mono or Stereo and definitely not 5.1 and i really do not have a great opinion on the DSP for conversion of 2 channel to 5.1.

perhaps the best combuination would be a Sub + a center channel

In my opinion-
Sub + Centre + Surrounds !

Arj bhai, the bullet whines as it flies; the thud is your body hitting the floor thereafter!
For full maza you need both the whine + the thud + the screams from the sides!

I suggested a sub because it would help improve the Stereo experience as well. Diamond 8.4 are just average on bass lines, adding a decent sub with proper placement should take the whole experience to a different level...additionally it would also enhance HT experience as there is so much information on DVDs which only a sub can do justice to.

Kamal sir, I fully agree. but since he said 80% music and movies only 20% and I am not really sure if that is only DVDs with DTS/DOlby since only then does the surround sound really good.
if he is willing to increase his budget then Yes going the full hog is worth it.

-If it's just music, add a sub.
-If it's the crash, boom & bang, go the whole hog.

If it's the latter, go Warfedale all the way to avoid tonality issues.

I would suggest you invest in a sub( a def tech or a wharfedale)and get the daimond 8 center. For surrounds you can hunt around for used mini-compo speakers( it is likely that your friends or relatives would have a unit taht doesn't work save for the speakers).

thanks people..

After much introspection (virginity and all..) I think with my usage it should be a good center and sub.

For tonality issues I think a Wharfie center would do.

For SUB - Wharfedale? I was thinking of the Sonodyne too..

thanks so much

Strongly suggest the DEftech Prosub 100TL, have it with the same setup you have(8,4s and diamond 8 center), it gels superbly. My room is a 16.3 foot X12.6 foot about 196square feet just so you are wondering.

Any ideas on how much the Deftech would set me back by?? Bangalore India prices if possible..

Also visited the Def tech webpage.. they have only active subqwoofers.. Would I need an active sub?? I have an AVR?? a little confusing..

Thanks

you need only an active sub.

the avr ouputs Line level ie equivalent for a Pre out. IF you do not have an active sub you would need a separate amp and a passive woofer.

LOL...well, they are not that bad really...but the deftech does make a world of difference. Probably the best sub you could buy at that price..YOu could at least audition a few subs if it is possible.

I suggest going to the Wharfedale dealer and ask him to hook up the 8.4s in a 5.1 setup and then switch between the Sub and the speakers(keep the sub out of the loop) to see what you are losing out on..

Hello,

Due to pre budget and other financial constraints. I have deceided to first go for a Wharfedale 8 center. There are 2 shops in Blore. However I would like to know what would be the going rate for a Wharfedale 8 Center alone in the current times.. considering Wharfies 8 is a bit dated..

Thanks

My folks have a wharfedale diamond 8 center in their HT (diamond 8.4 fronts, aiwa surrounds, def tech prosub 100TL).

Personally if you have the wahrfedale diamond 8 series fronts then go for it.

Oh, and I paid 9k for it...hmm almost 4 years ago i would think. (for which i still haven't received the receipt from the stupid dealer)

It is a well built unit with a good sound (can't really articulate it with all the audiophile jargon). YOu are welcome to listen to the setup at my home if you are in Bangalore. My dad would be more than happy to let you audition it. Reign had been to my place only last week.

So its not a problem at all.
YOu could even check out the Def Tech sub in action and maybe help you crystallise on one for a future purchase.

Thanks Savyasaachi.

I will PM you for your house address/contacts and maybe one of these weekends will call up and see your set up as its very similiar to mine (8.4 Diamonds and Marantz 4600). Surrounds / Subs and Center are in the pipeline
