Would like to start a thread to list 24 bit / 96 KHz ( or higher res

) DACs, and share info and views on this topic, including 1st hand experiences, web reviews ect.

Discussions on different interfaces and their pro / cons also welcome.

Would also be nice to hear of any experiences / reviews where a 16 bit DAC has bettered a 24 Bit product.

I would like to soak in as much on this topic as possible, mainly for Hard Disk Based playout..

Anyone knows if this product is available in India ?

M-Audio Stand Alone 24/96 USB DAC

Its a a pro audio DAC (retail) priced at just US $ 249.

First hand impressions on M-Audio's other DACs too, welome.

The only "budget" DAC I have found to be available officially in India is the Cambridge Audio DACMagic:

And then there's the Beresford TC-7510 DAC which the designer/seller says he can ship to India rather cheaply:

The Beresford should be well under 10k though unlike the overpriced (in India) DACMagic.

I keep wondering whether to go the DAC route for my stereo (not PC) setup but can't bring myself to give up SACD.

If there are any other DACs available in India, I too would love to know.

Amp_Nut, you might also be interested in the Weiss Minerva DAC that Sbfx & Bhagwan69 have.
That DAC seems to connect to the PC using the hi-speed FireWire bus.
Found yet another 24/192 DAC - Cary Audio Xciter. Supposed to retail for US$1500.

BOTH the DAC that you have recommended seems great alternates.

How mush is the asking price in India for the Cambridge DAC ?

Links for reviews of either of these 2 DACs ?

Yes, the Weiss Minerva has ofen been considered a benchmark product. I am waiting for Bhagwan69 to se-set up his system, and listen to that DAC.

Wonder if it will measure up to the Theta Gen VII which I heard with the emperical audio USB interface. ... In all fairness that combo is 3X or 4X the price of the Minerva,,,

Will look into the Cary Audio Xciter. Their CD player was great, but did not quite cut the mustard as a DAC ( Using its Digital In ) with the IPod + Wadia iDock

Just checked out the Cary Audio Xciter video on the Cary Audio website :

Seems the Xciter series of products ( Currently an amp and a DAC cum Headphone amp ) are targetted Not at the Primary audiophile system, but atr the Second system - Bedroom / work table ...

I guess they are Budget not audiophile products...

I have tried and realised that there is a Chalk & Cheese difference between a good and Bad DAC, and one should not expect cheese from simple chalk...

This was just released;
I have not got the chance to listen to it.
However, I did listen to the CD / SACD 306 Professional & that was a great CD Player. I liked it a lot.

Yeah! Finally! I received from Moon Audio the Cary Xciter tube amp and the Xciter DAC!

I´m in the middle of the breaking in process but I can already say i´m stunned! The tube sound of the amp is just great (I know, other thread) but also the DAC is fabulous.

I tried it with both my cd players (Sony and Jungson, see footer) and I have to say that the sound improves significantly!!!

I experienced the best improvment together with a Wadia iTransport and my ipod classic! Really, if you own an ipod and are used to the poor ipod sound, try to connect the ipod digitally (e.g. via iTransport) to a DAC and your amp and be absolutely stunned. Even 128 kbit mp3s suddenly sound great (comparatively). If the files have higher resolution even a very good cd player gets difficulties.

Still i´m not completely sure if I prefer the balanced tube output of my Jungson VS3 or the digital output via DAC. I think I have to test further...

So I´m really happy with my DAC at the moment!!!
