Both the Times and What HiFi are the pits. I remember attending fantastic shows in Bombay with luxuries like:
1. 5 star hotel
2. Numerous stalls with all the top manufacturers
3. A demo room for each serious company

Some of these shows were even free! What a degeneration.
This forum is now the only way to keep in touch with hifi.

Say, if u guys won't me for being so optimistic, can I expect something better from the avMax shows? Do they still conduct shows.

If I may take the liberty to add to what Neutral wrote, in Mumbai there were well appointed rooms [demo] along with some wine & other goodies.

The AV Max Show is scheduled in November, to the best of my knowledge. I will have to check with the exact dates and get back to you.

Actually the entire publishing business is on the 'block'
It is up for sale & hence, even the award function was not held. Sad.

I suppose the future of A [Audio] Shows is now 'dead'
We will only have V'Video' Shows.

Frankly, I thought the 'Awards" were lame. Served no purpose except to bow to regular advertisers... IMHO ofcourse

Audio Shows are Very Tough if not Impossible to hold in most Indian Metros, in Hotels that run so full, they Dont WANT to sell the entire floor(s) to an audio show.

Hence a "Proper" Hotel (auditioning) room Audio Show in Mumbai, Delhi or Bangalore is practically ruled out for the immediate future.

Let me confess... I have been nursing an ambition to do an audio show in Mumbai...

yeah.. i never did think hotel rooms are ideal for good audio setups anyway.

i am sure many of the mumbai forum members would be interested in pitching in in helping for planning of setups. it is a good exercise in acoustics.

Sure Hotel rooms are not perfect - from the audio acoustics point; however, the part I like best, is all rooms are of the same size [well almost] & have the same material & finish. Hence, it makes the playing field 'level'. All the participants have the same good or the same bad room.
Hence, for me [as an audiophile] it is a perfect place to compare different audio gear.
All dealers have different demo rooms @ their end and they are ususally 'optimised' hance most everage gear may also sound very very nice. This gets to be misleading.
Here - at the audio show all things are equal !! I like that.

A plus point of hotel rooms is their soundproofing. Acoustic interference is minimised. If u take any other venue like a marriage hall, sports ground, etc, how will demos be possible?

Well, afternoon tiredness has gotten to me and so I have come up with this crazed idea.
Have the show at a beach resort, with each audio company in its own shack. Sun, sand, and music! What could beat this?

Dear Amp_Nut,

The hifi industry in India is a small one.
Mostly everyone knows everyone. All you need to do is find a 5 star Hotel that will allow to occupy an entire floor for demo rooms.
Maybe, if booked a year in advance, chances are that you might get lucky.
Getting the industry to participate, if its a classy show, wont be difficult.
All the best. Consider me in.

Hi SNV,

Yes, you are correct.

I have been doing large professional shows for almost 15 years.

I address the Cable TV industry, with a monthly industry magazine and an annual, Govt approved tradeshow, with clearence for duty free import of exhibits.

ALL 5 STAR Hotels in Mumbai run to FULL capacity, and the Hotels do NOT want to give out their room, because :

1. Its a Pain for them to move the beds, bedside tables & furniture out for 4 days ( 3 days + 1 set up day ).

2. The visitor traffic in the Elevators to the rooms affects all other guests.

3. The Music distrubs other guests on the floors above and below the Auditioning rooms.

4. 5 Star guests dont take kindly to a mela in their midst.

5. And why Should the hotel do all this .... they sell out ALL rooms ANYWAY !

Dear Amp_nut,

Will it be possible to organize a show at some resort ?

Most of the resorts will be having an off season period, the demo rooms plus accommodation for guest can be arranged at a reasonable rate.

The visitors can be offered a family package too.

Just one of my weired thoughts...

for it to be worthwhile for the Exhibitors...

Ampnutji,
What about 500 visitors lured by an attractive 2 day package. Try and get all of the resorts to participate it can be promoted as an event to promote lesser known retreats too.

Market it as a family package, try and get the spouse in to the picture

However wonder if it would be considered Upmarket enough a venue, without airconditioning & carpeting, to demo Expensive stuff... ?

But colleges have them with high ceilings and rather large.....not a bad idea ! May not do very well with classes having a sloped sitting structure.

I dont think carpets and A/c would matter much for serious enthusiasts or would it ? Not to me, it wouldnt.

Kamalji, thats tru out of the Box (Hotel ?) thinking.

as mentioned by bhagwan it will simulate a room additionally will be large enough to house bigger speakers which most hotel rooms are unable to do.

since there are large No of rooms..that wshould not be a constraint as well.

School dueing holiday season is a really good idea!

an entry fee will make it an effective filter as well

Kamalji,
School is a good idea.

Air conditioning can be arranged by making use of large packaged units, like the way they do it at Pragatimaidan, Delhi. will have to keep it far away to reduce blower noise

If possible, something in Andheri/ Vile Parle would be great. Centrally accessible and target market nearby. A school / college would be very affordable. It would also allow you to put in the 'mass market' masala to achieve break even volumes. Just audiophile stuff may not draw in a large crowd.

I f yes, A/C may not be reqd then.
Rent lots of carpets from tent wallahs.
Colored sacking filled with bhoosa/stuff tacked onto cheapwood frames propped up strategically to control resonances; would look ethnicish, too - & you could donate these "mattresses" after the
show,to look virtuous!
And I agree with Neutral-ensuring adequate footfalls is good.
