Hi

Chor Bazaar is on Mutton Street, off Mohammed Ali Road. Closed on Fridays. Are you in Mumbai? By the way you will find a good collection of LPs too..ranging from Rs.20 to Rs.50 per record.

All the best!

Not to be the hair in anyone's soup but I think it is important to bear in mind that ... "if it looks too good to be true, it probably is."

You are SO Right, particleman.

ALL goods sold at the "Thieves Market" are used.... and your warranty runs out when you leave the shop. No auditions provided either

I guess I would prefer a Rs 3 K Philips DVD player off the counter, with a 1 year warranty, than a Rs 7 K unknown entity for 'Thieves Market " !

I would never even expect the seller to remember that he sold me anything forget about a warranty. However my question was if anyone had any experience in buying anything from there..especially electronics. I bought some Lps (each @Rs.50/-) and im currently trying to get the stylus of old Sansui Turntable (P-D20) replaced. Once I do that and I actually play the LPs, I will write whether the LPs were any good. On the face of it they look good without any scratches.

DVD Player - of course it would be safer to buy a new branded one off the shelf ..and guess what..I did not even see any DVD players there. What I saw is probably something you won't get off the shelf anymore.

I am not so sure about the quality of these records or audio gear for that matter.

It has been overly abused.

The records @ Rs. 5/- to Rs. 50/- are good to play on NAD TT's and sorts. I would strongly advise against playing them on 'any respectable' TT. You will ruin your 'expensive' cartridge. I am not so sure if it is worth the risk.

I do not advocate any purchases from 'CB' !!

Bhagwan at 5 bucks a pop its worth checking out! Even if 5 percent of the LPs are playable its a good bargain. And the ones that are playable can be cleaned on a nitty gritty and you are on! I'm definitely going to give it a shot when I'm next in Mumbai. I have already enlissted support at least moral(!) from Satyam.

Sure, worth giving it a try;

However, please be ware that your TT - Cartridge can really get screwed.

Use these records only on 'cheap' entry level TT's.

However, they are a good source of 'Music' but not necessarily 'Audiophile' quality recordings. Old Rock + Classical + Hindi Movie etc. is available.

Dear Friends,

Have you ever STOLEN anything? Are you a thief or burglar?

Considering buying stolen goods is almost as good as stealing them or definitely sponsoring the thieves.

I have had a shocking experience last month. I returned from my holiday to Austria and discovered that there was a burglary at my house and my entire house was badly ransacked. Besided many other valuables, following audio equipment were stolen:

1. NAD C3200BEE Amp
2. NAD C521BEE CDP
3. Marantz SR 4500 AVR
4. Teac CDP
5. Pioneer DVD player
6. BPL Worldspace radio
7. Many of my favorite CDs & DVDs

I am just left with the speakers.

Well you might get to buy them at "Chor Bazar". Would you like to?

Remember, we spend days to research and audition to choose the right equipment. Spend months or years to gather money (or courage) to buy them. And these guys can rip you off in one stroke - just because someone out there is willing to buy all this.

Please think before you patronize "Chor Bazar".

I was luck that police has been able to catch all the thieves and has been able to recover Marantz AVR, NAD Amp and Worldspace radio (not the rest). I have not yet received these items from the police so I am not sure what condition they are in.

So friends - food for thought !

Regards

Sanjay

Man Doctor...thats really sad buddy...I just cant imagine how you would have felt when you got back home . Its really really sad and shocking. Looks like the Police did a good job in nabbing the thieves...I wonder how they were able to catch them even though you didnt complain immediately. But whatever it is its sad. Really feel sorry about that buddy.

Doc my sympathies with you.
I dont think Chor bazaar is exactly what it means...basically its old stuff which people throw away. Anyway its now got a kind of 'boutique' feeling perhaps something like Haus Khas in Delhi. Thats my take. I dont think the law would allow a 'real' chor bazar, one where stolen goods can officially be sold by the thieves!

Rumour has it that a lot of good at "Chor Bazaar" are actually stolen from burglaries just like DOC mentioned.

Doc I do feel bad for you. I sincerely wish you get your goods back in fine working order.

Dear Friends,

Thanks for your feelings !

I have been in close contact with the police for last 3 weeks. And I have also had the misfortune of seeing & meeting these theives. Police says that most of the time this "kabari" business is the guise or coverup for selling or disposing off stolen goods.

Just image why would any audiophile sell his used equipment in good working condition to a "kabari" at junk prices. I wont. Most of us are actually emotionally attached to our priced possesions - we would either sell it to another audiophile at a low price or may be just gift fro free to a friend. Or put it in kid's room or any other area of our homes. But never to "kabari".

Correct me if I am wrong.
