hi,

i was comparing the audio bit rate of a DVD-movie soundtrack (dolby digital) and an normal audio CD.

i found that the DVD-movie soundtrack plays at 448kbps whereas the audio CD plays at 1411 kbps.

I thought the DVD-audio was equivalent in quality when compared to an audio CD.

for the DVD-audio is it 448kbps per channel???

so out of the above two medias which one is superior in reality!!

or is the kbps thingy misleading???

A DVD-Audio disc is different from a DVD movie disc. In the movie dvds, the audio is either in Dolby Digital or DTS, of which DTS has a higher bitrate. A DVD-A disc, is encoded in MLP (Meridian Lossless Packing), and is much superior to dolby digital or DTS.
About DVD-A vs CD, well I haven't heard a DVD-A yet, so can't comment on that.

DVD-A can have one or multiple formats encoded on a single disc. A pure 2-channel stereo MLP recorded without compromising quality is theoretical better in terms of dynamics, transient attacks, tonal reproduction, etc. And if you were to compare equivalent quality DVD-A with a CD Player - the DVD-A sounds better.

And personally I liked SACDs better than DVD-A.

The audio track in movie DVDs falls way behind the Audio CD.

Very True.

As a 'Bird's eye View " look at it this way ....

In a DVD-A disc the entire capacity of the disc is dedicated to audio,

In a DVD Most of the disc's data capacity is kept aside for the Video, and crumbs kept aside for Compressed audio...

hmm so thats why when i try to fit/write a DVD-9 movie onto a DVD-5 disc its the video quality that get affected than the audio quality.

dont have any knowledge on this, but how is the quality of audio in the case of HD-DVD or blue-ray discs.

I am speaking about the movies since i dont see any HD/BD audio title.

Those would be much better than a CD, and maybe even better than DVD-A/ SACD. Here are the bitrates -

Dolby Digital Plus - 6mbps
DTS HD - 6mbps
Dolby TrueHD - 18mbps
DTS HD Master Audio - 25mbps
