Toshiba Resigns from Format War; Blu-ray Wins!
Posted February 18, 2008 07:52 PM by Josh

Sources close to the situation have alerted Blu-ray.com that Toshiba is expected announce at a press conference to be held at 5pm (local time) in Tokyo, Japan that they have ended their support of the HD DVD format. Toshiba will announce that effective immediately, production of HD DVD hardware, software, and authoring tools will cease, and that sales and support of existing products will end sometime in March.

As the main supporters of HD DVD, their resignation effectively ends the format war. Blu-ray has won.

Since Warner Brothers' announcement that they would exclusively support the Blu-ray format, rumors have been circulating that HD DVD's lagging sales and loss of studio support would force Toshiba to exit from the high definition format war. The weeks following were riddled with additional studios, retailers, and distributors announcing that they too would support Blu-ray exclusively, concluding with Wal-Mart's announcement last Friday that they would drop support of HD DVD in June.

This information should be considered a rumor until Toshiba makes the official announcement, but our sources have always proven accurate. Once the official announcement is released, we will update this post with any additional information.

Universal Preparing Titles for Blu-ray

The statement that Blu-ray fans have been waiting for nearly two years to hear, president of Universal Studios Home Entertainment Craig Kornblau has announced that Universal Studios will begin distributing their films on the Blu-ray format. He commented, "While Universal values the close partnership we have shared with Toshiba, it is time to turn our focus to releasing new and catalog titles on Blu-ray."

He continued, "The path for widespread adoption of the next-generation platform has finally become clear. Universal will continue its aggressive efforts to broaden awareness for hi-def's unparalleled offerings in interactivity and connectivity, at an increasingly affordable price. The emergence of a single, high-definition format is cause for consumers, as well as the entire entertainment industry, to celebrate."

While no solid details about which titles or specific dates were revealed at this time, a more detailed announcement is expected soon.

Thanks goes to forum member aurevoir05 for posting the news.

BDA Comments on the End of the Format War

The Blu-ray Disc Association has made an official statement regarding Toshiba's announcement that they would no longer be supporting the HD DVD format. Andy Parsons, Chairman, Blu-ray Disc Association U.S. Promotions Committee commented, "We in the Blu-ray Disc Association are very happy that this long format war is officially over. Now the task ahead for our member companies is to promote the Blu-ray Disc format as the best way to bring premier quality high definition content into consumers' lives."

As the main supporter of the HD DVD format, Toshiba's announcement that they no longer would be supporting the format effectively ends the format war and Blu-ray has been proclaimed the victor. As the only high definition format viable for consumer adoption, the BDA's focus will now be shifted towards ensuring consumers understand the advantages of Blu-ray and the superior movie experience it offers.

HD DVD Market Penetration Revealed

In comments following the Toshiba press conference, there are some interesting sales numbers for HD DVD players.

Toshiba stated sales of 600,000 players in the US and 300,000 Xbox 360 HD DVD drives. 100,000 units were sold in Europe. And about 10,000 players and 20,000 recorders in Japan. So about 1,030,000 units worldwide.

Personally I found those numbers quite surprising - in that I thought there were more standalone players sold in the USA (and I am sure that some HD DVD supporters believed that there were many more, over 1 million was often seen on the forums).

So while Warner may have sunk the boat with their shot, it is clear that with only 600k units sold in the USA, Toshiba’s targets for HD DVD penetration were not being met…

LG to Continue HD DVD Support

Hoping to bridge the gap for HD DVD-supporting early adopters, LG said Tuesday that it would continue to support HD DVD in the wake of Toshiba's announcement.
In a statement first published by Pocket-lint.uk, LG acknowledged that Blu-ray will now be the leading high-def format, but "that does not rule out HDDVD immediately as there are still a number of consumers who have chosen HDDVD and begun to build a HDDVD collection." The manufacturer went on to say that "at this present moment in time, it is necessary to provide a player which supports both formats and therefore create simplicity and convenience for the existing HDDVD consumer."
LG was the first electronics manufaturer to offer a dual-format high-def player, first issuing its BH100 back in January of 2007 (the company has since updated that earlier model with the BH200). Late last year, Samsung had entered the dual-format player market with its BD-UP5000, and plans for a second player in the coming months. A Samsung official was quoted Sunday as saying the company would likely focus on Blu-ray moving forward.

Paramount readying release slate?

Zitat :

mntwister (Robert) @ Feb 19th, 2008 At 11:01 am says: "It is going to be nice to own all of the Hollywood movies, not just certain studios. I think now we will see big strides for high def disc. All of the studios and hardware manufacturers can get together and use combined efforts to really sell the public. And now all movies have a 50gb possibility rather than 30. Toshiba had the chance, with player prices lower and full interactivity sooner. But two problems, the public is not stupid and I think could see the better format, and 2nd, it is clear now that the public or fans were not as interested in the interactivity and internet connectivity as much as fanboys claimed.

Still, i've been taught not to gloat and shake down the loser, but rather to shake their hand and wish them well, so I wish Toshiba well. Being an audio/video nut myself, losing hundreds of millions of dollars is not something I like to see any electronics company do. Scott I am a little surprised you mentioned Toshiba pouting, it's a big loss for them and there were alot of people who spent hard-earned dollars on hd-dvd players that are screwed over now...I hope we can all show the hd-dvd people respect as they come into the blu fold. let's let the format war be in the past and I really hope the online community can somehow join together again.

I can safely say this now, my sister works at Paramount Home video for years now, and there have been things going on there since the Warner move. There are discs pressed in their warehouses. Their announcement is coming sooner than you think. That's all she has let me say (because she reads these forums)...but you will be surprised how ready Paramount is."

Anyone here (or on the Insider thread) have any insight into this? I know that they already had a ton of movies pressed that were supposed to be released in Q4 before the "switch" (ahem, $150M) to HDDVD exclusivity.

Amazon has announced that they will now support Blu-ray as the high definition digital format of choice for consumers. This change in policy will result in Amazon more prominently promoting the Blu-ray format - including both players and movies - on its website. Amazon.com has become a favorite source of Blu-ray titles for fans, because of their lower pricing and excellent customer service.

Toshiba will keine Blu-ray-Player produzieren

Hollywood Reporter: Paramount veröffentlicht wieder Blu-ray Discs
21.02.2008 (ks)

Appleseed Ex Machina Gets Detailed

Warner Home Video has revealed the specs and extras for the upcoming Blu-ray release of 'Appleseed Ex Machina', due to hit store shelves March 11th, day-and-date with the DVD release. Video will be presented in 1.78:1 VC-1 1080p with a Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack. Extras include audio commentary and two featurettes - "Team-Up: John Woo and Shinji Aramaki," "Revolution: Animating Ex Machina". The Blu-ray release will have two additional featurettes over the DVD: "Shirow's Journey: The Appleseed Chronicles" and "Appleseed Ex Machina: East Meets West."

Following the non-nuclear war that killed half the world's population, the city-nation of Olympus stands as a beacon of hope in a world of chaos and conflict. The utopian metropolis is governed by Gaia, a vast artificial intelligence, and administered by genetically engineered humanoids known as Bioroids, whose designer DNA suppresses strong emotions. With Bioroids being half of its population, peace and order are easily maintained. Deunan, a young female warrior, and Briareos, a veteran cyborg-soldier, are both partners and lovers. As members of E.S.W.A.T., the elite special forces serving Olympus, they are deployed whenever trouble strikes. The two fighters find their partnership tested in a new way by the arrival of a new member to their ranks — an experimental Bioroid named Tereus. Created by Gaia using DNA from Briareos, Tereus uncannily resembles Briareos before the wartime injuries that led to his becoming a cyborg. Not only does this trouble Deunan, but Briareos's DNA gives Tereus more than top-notch fighting skills; this battle-ready Bioroid is like Briareos in another way — he has also strong romantic feelings for Deunan!

Blu-ray Player Sales Soar in UK

UK online retailers Play.com and Dixons.co.uk have both reported large spikes in Blu-ray player interest from their customers since Toshiba officially announced they would no longer be supporting the HD DVD format, effectively declaring Blu-ray the winner of the high definition format war. Dixons is reporting that searches for Blu-ray player are up 150%, while Play.com is reporting that Player sales the day of the announcement were up 700%.

deVere Forster, managing director at Dixons, commented, "This is good news for consumers as the availability of a single format will allow consumers to purchase the high definition Blu-ray format DVD player with every confidence and enjoy all the benefits that this fantastic format has to offer".

Stuart Rowe, Chief Operating Officer at Play.com remarked, "People have been waiting a long time to move into the Hi-Def era and now they have the confidence that this is going to be the format."

Consumers have been reluctant to purchase high definition movies during the format war for fear they would end up investing in a failed format. Now that a winner has been declared the winner, consumers are flocking to purchase movies and players on Blu-ray.

As much as the format war has been credited for lowering player prices and offering exclusive sales, it also had its part in keeping consumers away. With a winner declared, consumer adoption can adjust to the level it should have been at all along.

BBC to Explore 'Ganges' on Blu-ray

BBC Video has announced it will bring the documentary 'Ganges' to Blu-ray this July.

Filmed entirely in high-definition, 'Ganges' tells the story of the world's most extraordinary river, revealing how the Ganges has shaped the wildlife, culture and beliefs of India. BBC has set a street date for the Blu-ray of July 1, day-and-date with the standard-def DVD.

'Ganges' marks BBC Video's first title announcement since Toshiba pulled the plug on the HD DVD format earlier this week. Although BBC reiterated it's format-neutral stance just a few weeks back, at press time the distributor had not announced an HD DVD version of the title. (We're currently awaiting word from BBC on their future format plans, so stay tuned.)

Tech specs for the Blu-ray will see the 104-minute program presented on a BD-25 single-layer disc in 1080p/VC-1 video (1.78:1), and English Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo.

Extras shared between both the Blu-ray and the standard DVD include a collection of deleted scenes.

Toshiba: Proof Of Life

With the format war "safely" behind them, Toshiba is undeniably down, but certainly not out, according to Toshiba’s own, Atsutoshi Nishida.

Nishida shared with the WSJ that although HD DVD is toast, that they aren’t giving up the fight. No, through a re-jigging of their "up-conversion is better" strategy, Toshiba will drop the HD DVD tech, and focus entirely on up-converting players in the future. This of course coincides with their plans to ignore Blu-ray altogether, as previously announced.

We’re not entirely sure HOW good an up-converter might look in the future, or whether or not the studios will stick to their SD DVD guns, but as for now we don’t see anything besting HD DVD and Blu-ray for some time to come, especially not up-converters.

Read, WSJ.

(ck)

Mitsubishi Introduces Two Blu-ray Recorders

Posted March 18, 2008 08:00 AM by Josh

Mitsubishi Electronics has announced that they will release two Blu-ray recorders, the DVR-BZ100 and DVR-BZ200, on May 24th in Japan. The BZ100 will feature a 250GB hard drive, while the BZ200 gets the beefier 500GB hard drive. Both players utilizes an AVC encoder which allows them to store 1080p high definition video on either a Blu-ray disc, DVD, or the local hard drive.

The players also feature "REALINK" which allows them to connect seamlessly to REAL brand LCD HDTVs. Additionally, the players come with two remotes: a standard and a Gutto touch-screen. The standard remote has to be used to program the touch-screen remote, but once it is programed, the standard remote is no longer needed for operation.

Both players come equipped with HDMI in and out ports that are compatible with 24p content, and feature many video and audio connection options. They also have an SD card slot (for storage of video content only) and an ISDB tuner for capturing broadcast television (in Japan only). There is no manufacturers retail price at this time.

As reported by Blu-ray insider Penton-Man over a week ago, Graffeo will leave Universal. Not my favorite personality from the format war, but I don't rejoice when someone loses his/her job. Penton and Max write kindly about Graffeo, and they know him on a personal level. Heres' the article:

By Susanne Ault -- Video Business, 3/26/2008

Graffeo

MARCH 26 | Following the death of HD DVD, one of the format’s gurus, Ken Graffeo, will leave his high-definition marketing role at Universal Studios Home Entertainment.

Although still employed at Universal, where he has served as executive VP of HD strategic marketing since early last year, Graffeo is exploring other opportunities, including ones outside of the studio. He didn’t specify a timetable for when he’ll make a final decision of whether to leave Universal.

Conceivably, Universal will need an executive to drive the marketing of its forthcoming titles in Blu-ray Disc, which the studio started backing exclusively shortly after HD DVD’s demise.

However, Graffeo said he will not take on a Blu-ray role at the studio, which could be comparable to his responsibilities for HD DVD. That sort of transition wouldn’t work because in recent months, Graffeo had become more entrenched in his additional role as head of the HD DVD Promotional Group and less involved with handling specific Universal titles. The HD DVD Promotional Group dissolved on the heels of Toshiba’s February announcement that it was ending its support for its HD DVD hardware.

“I was setting up that infrastructure [of the HD DVD Promotion Group] on a day to day basis,” said Graffeo. “And now that group is no longer in existence. … Now I’m looking at what my different options are and what my next moves will be.”

Although Blu-ray title sales outsold HD DVD titles on a two-to-one basis through much of last year, Graffeo aggressively promoted the HD DVD format. Under his charge, Universal rolled out the industry’s first title enhanced with e-commerce capabilities, the Oct. 9 HD DVD release Evan Almighty.

Universal hasn’t specified how it will operate its Blu-ray business going forward, and it has not announced its first releases in the format. It appears that the studio is still figuring out how a Blu-ray unit and/or executives will fit into its company and what their functions will be.

Prior to his high-def role at Universal, Graffeo served as executive VP of marketing.

Starkes Blu-ray Wachstum

Es geht also deutlich voran!

Blu-ray Sales on the Rise

Posted March 26, 2008 11:15 AM by Josh

Blu-ray Disc New data from HMR Research shows that the 9 million movies have been sold on Blu-ray since inception of the format in the United States, with 3 million of those having been sold during the first 11 weeks of this year. If this trend continues, Blu-ray is poised to sell nearly 15 million units in this year alone.

The recent release of blockbuster Hollywood movies on Blu-ray has boosted overall sales. The Miramax release of 'No Country for Old Men' sold 68,000 copies on Blu-ray during its first week of sales, a huge accomplishment for a format where previous top sellers this year were selling only 30,000 copies during their first week of sales.

As more highly anticipated titles get released onto store shelves, such as Fox's April 15th release of 'Juno', sales are expected to continue to grow throughout the remainder of the year.

V for Vendetta Finally Coming to Blu-ray

While we’ll all have to wait until July 8th to get their hands on a copy of Batman Begins, it appears that Warner Bros. feels our pain.

With a release set for May 20th — according to Amazon — the Wachowski produced, McTeigue directed flick, V for Vendetta is finally making its way to Blu-ray.

Despite the fact that WB has remained format neutral since the beginning of the format war, HD DVD was privy to a number of coveted high def titles, V for Vendetta included, due to their inclusion of the IME tech. Naturally, now that Blu-ray has been declared the victor of the high def battle, and the Blu-ray tech/profiles are up to snuff, it’s only a matter of time before WB fulfills their obligation to bringing these former HD DVD exclusives to Blu-ray.

Of course, we’re willing to bet that it won’t end there, so be sure to keep your eyes peeled for a special edition Blu-ray of "300" to drop — teeming with new extras and the blue screen PiP feature — sometime in the not-so-distant future… it’s inevitable. Don’t you think?

Man darf also gespannt sein... (mk)

Future Disney/Pixar Animation Projects Announced

Walt Disney Pictures and Pixar Animation Studios have announced the future animation line-up for the two studios (Pixar is now wholly owned by Disney). While not all the announced films are are surprises - the Summer release of 'Wall-E' and the upcoming 3-D releases of the popular 'Toy Story' films - we do get a peek at some great previously unannounced films.

2008
Wall*E (Pixar)
Bolt (Disney Animation)
Tinker Bell (DisneyToon)

2009
Up (Pixar)
Toy Story 3-D (Pixar)
The Princess and the Frog (Disney Animation)
Tinker Bell North of Neverland (DisneyToon)

2010
Toy Story 2 3-D (Pixar)
Toy Story 3 3-D (Pixar)

Rapunzel (Disney Animation)
Tinker Bell A Midsummer Storm (DisneyToon)

2011
Newt (Pixar)
The Bear and the Bow (Pixar)
Tinker Bell A Winter Story (DisneyToon)

2012
Cars 2 (Pixar)
King of Elves (Disney Animation)

Why is this on Blu-ray.com? Well, it turns out that the Tinker Bell films have all been confirmed for Blu-ray release. Sure, in actuality all of these films will be Blu-ray as well, but as of today, only the Tinker Bell films have been confirmed.

Cult Series Firefly to get Blu-ray Release

We read over at TVShowsonDVD.com that Fox has confirmed with them that the cult series Firefly is due for a Blu-ray Disc release.

They say that Jewel Staite revealed at the Supernova Pop Culture Expo in Australia that she had recently been asked to provide new commentary for what she called "a special edition of Firefly".

TVShowsonDVD.com then contacted Fox for comment, and it was revealed that there will be a Blu-ray Disc release for the title.

There are no details but this is certainly good news for Firefly fans. Hopefully we will also see Universal release Serenity on Blu-ray to complement this release.

(mk),
