Apologies for the English, but I can read German, so please write back in German...

I am looking to buy a new dvd plyer to hook up to my Sany0 Z1.
So far I was only looking at progressive scan versions, but after reading some US sites, I became interested in the Lite-on LVP 2001.
This player can upscale the image to 1080 lines (2x what my Snayo can do), so hopefully giving me a better picture. The samsung 935 also has this option, but only through DVI. The liteon can give 1080I over YUV.

Is the upscaling worth it, or should I just go for Progressive scan?

Thank you for your help.

Hello Llinssen,

the Upscaling doesn´t make any sense for the Z1, because of its lower native resolution. First the DVD Player upscales the picture to 1.920 x 1080 and the Z1 downscales it to its panel resolution. The effect? Nothing worth to write about.

You have to de-interlace the picture to eliminate the flicker and for that You need the Progressive Scan feature with an optional Filmmode detection. This is the only way to really improve the picture quality.

Hello Oliver Sauermann

The logic behind it was:

The native display of the Z1 is 540. Normal PAL is 625. Now the Z1 needs to downscale the 625 to 540, and the z1 is probably not very well equiped to do so.

If the player can upscale to 1080, then the Z1 only needs to do a very simple job: cut it in two. That simple job the Z1 must be able to do better than the hard job.

Do I understand from you that you think it is still better to just have progressive scan and let the Z1 do the complicated "downscaling"?

Thanks once more,

Hello,

the visible lines of the Pal System are just 576, so there are just 36 lines missing. Due to the 16:9 Panel it has almost the perfect resolution.

Better invest in a DVD Player with Pal Progressive Scan and Filmmode-Detection.

Oliver,

Once again thank you. Any suggestions for that dvd player? I am now looking at three models: the Philips 630, the Pioneer 470 or the Sony 730.
I am not interested right now in DivX (do nt have broadband internet), purely in good quality dvd picture.
