This is a cross post from hifivision. I am a newbie trying to put together a budget stereo system. I decided to go pre-owned following folks' suggestions both here and in the other forum.

Could anyone please tell me a little about Carver/Sunrise amps?

Someone's offering me a 10 year old Carver integrated amp... He didn't know the model number but he claims it's 150 wpc. He quoted 15k.

Do you folks think it's a good deal? I don't know anything about this brand but it seems to be widely acclaimed. If I am buying this used piece, what should I lookout for?

Any other suggestions/watch-its while I make the purchase?

Carver made some of the technically most Revolutionary amps in that decade....

Not only his Magnetic Field Amplifier, but he also took on Absolute Sounds (?) challenge to mimic the sound of ANY amplifier, with his amplifier.

Technically a genius.

The amp that you are referring to .. I had heard that it was for sale some months ago.

A few pointers for Carver...

If it is Magnetic Field amplifier, make sure it for 220 VAC / 240 VAC operation. Those amps draw a HUGE reactive ( out of phase ) current, demanding that any 110 V / 240 VAC external transformer that you use will have to be stpidly over rated, or the amp will not be able to deliver its desined sound quality.

Also the Wall outlet should be well wired for supply of juice !

The Carver amps were quite a rage ( partly also for their marketing ) then. However, not many rated it Tops for sound quality, though for brute force... no question.

I really dont know how a 20 year old Carver will rate with today's budget gear.

I would probably be very tempted to buy it.

I think it wiould be a good into hi Fi. Also you cant loose too much value if you wanted to sell it.

Oh yes... also keep in mind that you will also need a Pre Amp for this Carver...

Thanks Amp_Nut. Are you saying it's a power amp? I remember quite well the guy said it was integrated. I'll get to check when I get a demo.

Buying an amp 1O yrs old is always dicey unless you know its history exceedingly well and have the means to get it serviced if need be.

Why don't you hear the entry level integrateds and compare with the carver before jumping in.

I have a 19 year old Carver integrated-CM-1065, 65 watts rms. Its an absolute beauty...to look at with its retro dials for each channel and a very musical, tubey kind of sound. Completely non-fatiguing, can listen all day. I have it in my second system driving a Marantz 5001 cdp and Jamo Classic 4 b/s speakers.
My suggestion....go for it.
