Taiwan is top notch.
Munich is a commercial show - more for business.
RMAF is a serious 2 channel show in USA.
CES is a commercial show - more for business & show case of new products.

Audiophiles should attend :-

Taiwan
RMAF
Munich
CES

In order of what is good for us.....

This is just my opinion...

Sadly, no I will not be able to attend this year despite my wanting to.
The show started off today 12 noon - 6PM on the Friday. It promises to be a great show as always.
If I find any links, I'll be sure to share.

Audio Federation is another good place to see detailed pix of the RMAF. For right now, Mike has just a synopsys/blog of this years show here:
Audio Federation RMAF 2010 blog

(I'm sure that he's uploading all the pix right now).

Thanks, HP.

Mentions in the TAS page were interesting and useful.

I particularly liked :

For those hardy souls who want to build their own audio PC from scratch, Genesis Advanced Technologies was giving out a newsletter with owner Gary Leonard Koh’s recipe for building an audio PC from the ground up. It will be called the Absolute Fidelity Music Server. Gary told me it would cost about $750 in parts.

The actual file can be downloaded from :
http://www.genesislo...ity_Music_Server.pdf

Some of the Hardware mentioned can ( I guess ? ) only be Dreamed of in India.... or can it be purchased here ? Anyone ???

can't answer the availability of hardware in India bit but if you build a music server/PC make sure that you use 120mm cooling fans 'cuz they are quiet (since they run at slower RPM yet provide plenty of cooling due to their larger size). I built a desktop tower PC for general home use this summer & I used 120mm fans & the PC is much quieter than the PC it replaced. FWIW.

Not sure if you will get everything here in India - but there is plenty available to make a good music server.

Checkout this shop called PrimeABGB at Lamington Rd. http://www.primeabgb.com/

I bought most of the hardware for my last htpc build a couple of years ago from primeabgb

Nice link - I clicked on the "About Us" page & what do I find????? The MD of the company is a sardar! A certain Mr. Gulbir Bhatia. awesome

On a more serious note: I looked @ the hardware available from this website & I see several items that are considered very good. Some of the hardware items that are very good are:
* Corsair, Kingston & OCZ RAM
(In my home desktop computer I personally have OCZ Gold Series DDR3 PC3-10666 4GB memory, which sells for Rs. 4000. Really good stuff). My friend here who has built PCs for himself for the last 15 years endorses all the above brands himself.
* Gigabyte & Intel motherboards
I personally have a Gigabyte motherboard. The exact model I did not find on the website but the ones displayed there look very good. The instruction manual for the Gigabyte MoBo are very good.
* PC cases by Thermaltake, Lian Li, Corsair
I personally have a Thermaltake PC case & I like it very much. It came w/ 1 120mm fan & I bought another 120mm fan. Plus, I have a dedicated CPU fan. So, plenty of cooling. I note that my CPU temperature always stays in the 43-45C range. I have the thermal limit set to 60C in the BIOS.
* Intel Core-iX processors.
I personally have an Intel Core-i3-530 myself & I'm overclocking it +10% at 3.3GHz with no overheating at all. See para above for CPU temperatures that I see consistently. You do not need to spend on a core-i5 or a core-i7 as the (lowly) core-i3 can be overclocked to 3.9GHz if you are willing to spend on a higher-end cooling fan (rather than the one that comes in the CPU box).
* Power supply from Corsair & Cool Master.
I do not have either of these brands at present as they were too much but I know that Corsair power supplies are very well regarded.

So, overall, Amp_Nut, there is plenty of good hardware in this shop on Lamington Rd that you should be able to build a pretty kick-ass music server.
Hope that this helps. FWIW. IMHO.

Yes, I have done business with Gulbir Bhatia a few times in the past. Nice chap, well informed, who genuinely has an interest in computer products.

Thanks for the pointers, surrealistix & Bombaywalla
