Someone please help me. My HIFI is a dolby surround sound system but its the old type so it doesnt have 5.1! Therefore theres no subwoofer output but ive got a sub that I want 2 connect up to it. Its a passive box that come out of my g/f's car so I cant use the line out from my amp! I remember seeing an article about this a while ago on the net, basically it said that the main speakers are connected as normal but to connect the sub I could connect one wire (+ or -, doesnt matter) to the left + terminal of the amp and the other wire to the right + terminal. Does anyone know if this will work, & if so, is it safe?? This system is my pride & joy I dont want to kill it

Thanks

Hi,

if you want to connect a passive subwoofer to a subwoofer-preamp-output you need an additional power-amplifier. Connect the power-amp to the subwoofer-out and the subwoofer to the poweramp.

Yea mate I know about that but I cant really affordan additional amp because im out of work now! I just want to know if the method I described earlier actually works because thats the only option I can think of without spending money

Thanks

Hi!

Isn't there a possibility to connect the subwoofer through the front speakers?

I could but ive only got the 1 sub so it would have to go on one of the channels (L or R) but it will mess up the balance between my main speakers! I was hoping that my original suggestion would work so it would balance the power between the channels. If it doesnt work then im going to have to get an amp to connect to the line out. Looks like the playstation is going!!

"simple" passive subwoofers do pass through the signal of a stereo-pair, so its not only one speaker. this is the - as far as i know - used method to connect a passive subwoofer to a stereo amp without a subwoofer-out.
