Hi everyone,

This might be really off-topic.

But I was thinking about the Sound systems used in cinemas halls like PVR, DT, etc… What type of components (speakers, amplifiers, cables etc.) do they install in a cinema hall and how is the SQ when compared to the expensive home theatre components meant for home use. R they of superior quality?

Which chain do you prefer the most when it comes to SQ?

Pulz, jbl are the ones I know that are in use today...maybe others....am told gotham cabling is used with pulz

But I do love the sound at the inox dome in mumbai. 3d image and sound to match.

I wish they were showing kungfu panda in the dome instead of the flat screen...awesome experience !

Btw I am a big fan of animated movies....

The sound in theaters I don't think is very accurate but some Theaters the dynamics are to die for(like the time sterling in bombay was renovated and die hard was one of the first films with the new sound system. Can't forget that experience).big horns would do that.

The combo of big picture with big sound I don't think many ht systems will match.

I did like one b&w setup which was done with jeff rowland amps by burge at hyatt ???? Awesome experience with movies but sucked big time with a live concert ! But that's a mega buck game. And then star wars....how would one ever get the deadly feel of ben kenobi's light saber swishing thru the air ? And chewbaca's growl ? And darth vader would never look and sound so scary if not for the cinema sound.

Given a choice its the movie theatre for me every time.

The approach to sound in theatres is very similar to a sound system designer’s approach in a studio. It is very engineering oriented. Very stark looking, high efficiency workhorse gear that is designed to create the desired SPL for a given volume of space. The better quality gear you buy the better the sound quality will be.
I kind of like the sound at PVR for the “bigness” of the sound accompanied by the big picture. The sound is reasonably accurate but not “true” in the strictest audiophile sense.
Yup king fu panda was just awesome. Nemo is one among the favorites. You guys should see WALL-E. Out of this world

The sound in a Theatre ( Home or Commercial ), is targetted somewhat different from that of a Hi Fi 2 Channel serious listning room.

Theatre sound is more 'Phenominal" than Purist, since it has to register and create an impact, despite the Visual Stimulation from the screen...

Even I like it....but recently when I visited Lido Mall/Theater (Old Madras road) I knew what PVR is lacking. Lido is superior and accurate in many aspects IMO. Do visit sometime.

Yup Lido is quite good. I saw "batman" and the "indiana jones" there. It is slightly better than PVR.
