Guys

I was quite amazed when a certain gentleman held up a recorded moser baer gold cdr to natural sunlight.....

I could see thru it. We swapped it around...I could see thru it again. :-)

The same goes for the moser baer pro as well.

Gives a new meaning to the word "transparency" whilst listening to a moser baer cd play...doesn't it ?

Anyone else noticed it ? The cd light absorbing mats may have been made seeing this phenomenon ?

I checked many of my original cd's, no such transparency noticed.

I don't know arj, but any cdr which is not see-thru is a good start I assume.

I remember samsung gold, verbatim, memorex black, tdk, mitsubishi, hp, as brands above the run of the mill stuff. I am told the black stuff is quite good. I remember using a few hp cdr's with a blue coating which actually did do very well.

Fact is I don't make cd copies. I still believe in paying for my music. Silly me.

Any pointers from the other forum members ?

in reality cdr do have a limited life before their dye could disintegerate slightly. so makes sense to have the original cd.

but there is another theory which says that burnt cds are better as the pits in the cds do cause timing errors and hence the reason why some pressed cds sound better. of course these are only theories !

1. I had a close look at some 'premium' gold CDRs from Moser, and they are MUCH more transparent than the Pro CDRs with their regular dye and label. I suspect that its the Label that basically is the cause of the lack of opacity on Gold CDRs.

I know for a fact that these 'transparent' gold CDs are a pain to read for the CD player, probably resulting in Much higer error rate during read... My aging Denon 2900 Universal player simply wont read them, but will read other CDRs, most of the time.

I certainly will not buy another Gold CDR.

2. Arj, I too have read that CDRs sound BETTER than the original. ... Well that is Quite the contrary on my system, and several CD players that I tried, including my Denon 2900, Electrocompaniet and Meridian ( which uses a CD ROM drive and buffers the bits read.... ).

3. About paying for music I hear.... I guess we all have our individually justified ethics. I for one am pretty fed up with buying CDs that I dont hear after the first or second listen, either because I dont like the music on it or because its been shoddily recorded. To me, CDRs provide a good medium to 'pre-listen' to them, and deciding if I want to buy.

Infact I am currently in the process of mail ordeing some audiophile CDs from the US, because I have heard them on CDR and they are fabulous...
