What exactly in the sound reproduction chain contributes to listening fatigue ? I have observed that systems having high amount of detail / treble often have more listener fatigue than those where the response is rolled off at around 8 khz. Is that due to the fact that all THD/ID is centred around that region (Above 8khz) and is thus automatically eliminated.

Inviting opinions from other audiophiles.

It is not detail that causes listening fatigue. It is distortion (sometimes disguised as detail in compromised designs) which causes it.

I was reading a paper long time back which said that listening fatigue is also contributed by speakers which lack proper time alignment, I forget what the exact reasoning was but let me see if I can find that article again.

Hi,

the Lithos website also has some interesting articles on listening fatigue.. something to do with the sudden dips and peaks in freq response.

If interested u can check it out at www.lithosindia.com

listening fatigue is also contributed by speakers which lack proper time alignment

the bass and treble arrive at the ear at delayed times instead of together and the brain recognizes this and struggles to reinterpret the music and put it back in its original time. or rather make sense of this delay and compensate for it this makes the brain tired. poor thing.

i guess fatigue is mainly caused due to exaggerated frequency. any one. or many together. this isn't normal sound and the ears cant take this unnatural sound for long and get tired. this exaggeration can happen due to bad speaker design (bose), bad cd players, bad amps, bad cables and recordings.

All Bose Speakers may not be badly designed. As a matter of fact I have observed that Bose gives less of detail and no imaging but there is no listening fatigue even after hours of continuous play. Why is anyone's guess (Maybe Dr. Bose).

everyone's ears are different and perceive different sounds differently. some are more sensitive than others. so that's another factor to be factored in

Excellent Explanation given for Speaker listening fatigue. But do other components in the reproducing chain also contribute to it ? Even the geometry of the room ??

Definitely.

Fatigue will occur if you get anything in your ear which is not comfortable to you.

depending on the person( actually the ear) the amount of discomfort due to high freq, bass thump, timing, distortion.. anything

since the reason of fatigue is so much so are the causes. which means that any component can do it.

everything from dirty power to source to amp to speaker to the room can have an impact on sound and as a result could be a cause of fatigue

for me if the vocals do not sound like i feel they should I just cannot stand it and overwhelming bass give me a headache !i can stand treble much better
