Need funda on THD rating

Hi,

What exactly is THD and what indication can one get from the THD value specified in an AMP's spec.

For example -

1. Rotel says for one of their AMP's that the THD is 0.03% for 20 to 20000.
2. Denon says THD is 0.07% again at 20 to 20000.
3. Arcam says THD is 0.008% at 80% output for 20 to 20000.

Among all these 3 then which one is better and why (at least as long as the specs go - sound wise they all will have different charcateristics)?

Lesser the THD value,better the amp..but if you had read some of the earlier threads,they are meant for marketing people,they do not convey the true capabilities of the amp..

Atleast my tin ears can't make out these miniscule diffrences...but will listen to all 3 and determine which is better for my taste....

This distortion varies across frequency and power hence for well known brands like the above,for all practical purposes ignore it

go for the one which makes your ears feel better

to add this rating can never ever be justified..so see if it drives the speakers of your choice to levels you listen to with out distortion and the sound suits your taste...others are irrelevent....
