I know everybody has their favorite tubes lists..

kindly do list them here..

For a tube noob like me it would be very helpful

I have found myself being sucked into this tube thing so bad that now I own a handful of tubes and have spent a pretty penny.

Been eying a few of the more esoteric variety now like the 6H30, Siemens ECC82/ECC88, Bugle Boys and what not..

Appreciate it and hope to learn a lot from your insights and experience.

Cheers,
Sachi

From what little I had heard about tubes from some experienced people is NOT to get carried away by the “romantic charm” of tubes. You will lose lot of money and gain pretty much nothing. They will all sound different. The question is “Is different better?” That is where the trick is. Identifying the best tube for the design. Here expensive is not always better
The tube world is full of “ old grandma’s tales”………..Beware

haha

duly noted vinny..

the most I have spent on a tube right now has been the Amperex Bugle Boy whcih I bought today for 15$ shipped.

DOn't think I will be mkaing any more purchases though for a while as I have a bunch of tubes to roll and only one amp to do it in ..

I have a pair of 6N1P-EB, a few 12BH7s, a few 5963s, a 6189 and a few 5814s.

Now this is for one amp that uses just one tube.

I have about 50$ total invested in about 20-25 tubes which is not bad i think but overkill yes. i see myself selling some of these off on ebay to recoup some of my investment as I am sure i will not like them all and will want to stick with one good tube when I find it.

One other tube I like is the 6GM8s, which have become real hard to find now.

I am however expecting a kit to arrive tomorrow for an amp taht uses exactly the same tubes. The kit inclues a set of tubes for 12$/pair. Well below current market prices am sure.

Oh, and that one amp that uses all those dual triodes is out on loan to a friend. Currently listening to a hybrid amp based on the 6GM8s..the same one that the kit is for.

However, I should have one more compact tube hybrid amp ready by the middle of next week. I hope to have the 6GM8 kit assembled as well next week..

Ach, I see that the NOS tube "tractor beam" has locked onto you is drawing you into its clutches.
As square_wave wrote, be careful not to buy on emotion & on the mere fact that the tube is NOS. Unless you know your tubes very well, don't fall for the NOS tubes because a lot of these tubes are really UOS - 'used, old stock'!
Again, a square_wave wrote, each amp/preamp topology has a certain type of tube that is preferred (low or higg Gm, low or high impedance, low or high plate voltage, low or high odd harmonics, etc) that make it better suited for the application. Look @ your application & choose wisely. Try to see if you can get an alternate tube to the highly sought after ones as this might save you some money. Good luck!

Sharukh,

I love the el34 and will always do so.

The kt88 has that little bit of more oomph which just edges out the el34 just a little bit but they are both great tubes.

Compensate the kt88/6550 with a bloomy, lush preamp tube and you are set for a long time:-)

Speaking of which I wonder how the 6sn7 would sound with kt88's ?

Manek,

I hold the 6550 in high esteem, because to me it has all the Positives of BOTH - the EL34s and the KT88s, without either of their drawbacks...

bloomy, lush
I am sure candle light, red wine and Nina simone crooning away in the back ground and a nice dame will complete the romantic picture for Sachi.
Manek, Sachi is being tracked by the romantic tracker beam. You are sure to be the cause of his doom……….

out of all the tubes i've heard i prefer the 2A3s in the SET application. el84 and el34 rocking bluesy, kt88s powerful, 845 clean power. the 2A3s are more musical and involving more seductive sounding. to clarify, the el84s and el34s were in a push pull application, the 845s in SET mode and the kt88 in push pull again so do discount for the varying modes.
i've heard a lot about the 45 tube and would like to hear a 45 SET amp some day.

regards
